"I am not engaged in illegal behavior," Crowell said on the Senate floor on April 10. "I'm not going to be bullied."

"Everyone pushing this bill doesn't have to live with the consequences of its passage," Crowell said. "They're spending my money and I'm pissed."

On Crowell's assault on the economic development bill:

"If you think you are going to force me into a position to cram [your demands] down our throats, you ain't judged me very well," Sen. John Griesheimer, R-Washington, said. "I'm a hard-headed Dutchman, I ain't a pushover and I have had enough."

Crowell, a board member of the Missouri State Employees Retirement System, defended bonuses paid to investment staff after the fund lost $1.8 billion in the stock market crash:

"The overall fundamental understanding of why we made the decision hasn't changed in a down market or an up market," Crowell said. We judge them by the job they do."
