Cape Girardeau orthodontist Dr. David Crowe was appointed Monday to the Missouri Commission on Autism Spectrum Disorders by Gov. Jay Nixon. Crowe, 57, is the father of Taylor Crowe, who was diagnosed with autism as a toddler. Taylor Crowe is now a college graduate. He has published a children's book on autism, gives speeches on autism and, with his father, produced DVDs about the condition. Dr. Crowe is the founder of Crowe and McGuire Orthodontics. He also is the founder of the Tailor Institute, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with high-functioning autism or Asperger syndrome. The commission makes recommendations for developing a comprehensive state plan for training, treatment and services for the autistic. Crowe's term will last until Sept. 3, 2010.
