Cape Girardeau County has been awarded $22,862 in federal funds to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the area.
The selection was made by a national board chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The board was charged to distribute money appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.
A local board made up of representatives from local emergency services providers, the Area wide United Way, Community Caring Council, Cape Ministerial Alliance and county commissioners determines who the money will be distributed to.
Under terms of the grant, local governmental or private organizations may receive funds if they meet five criteria: be non-profit, have an accounting system, practice non-discrimination, have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and or shelter programs, and if they are a private organization have a voluntary board.
Emergency Food and Shelter funds awarded to Cape County in the past have bee distributed to the American Red Cross, East Missouri Action Agency, FISH, Jackson Food Pantry, Safe House for Women and the Salvation Army. These agencies were responsible for providing 2,200 meals and 500 nights of lodging in the past year.
To apply for the funding, agencies or organizations should contact the United Way.
