Opportunities for growth in the undeveloped area around the new Central High School on Silver Springs Road are great, which is why the Cape Girardeau City Council and school board plan to meet in a joint session Monday night.

Councilmen and board members will meet at the new Career and Technology Center to discuss a number of issues concerning the completion of the new high school, including transportation and safety, and a road design plan for Silver Springs Road.

School district superintendent Dan Steska said the board and council are meeting mainly to make sure both groups have the same views about important issues.

The primary issue Steska hopes to talk about with the council is the design for Silver Springs Road in front of the school.

He said before the school district pays to complete any design on the road around the school it wants to discuss the plans with the city.

Because the building will be visible from Interstate 55, Steska is going to ask the city to work to make the area as well lit and attractive as possible.

Another issue the school board hopes to discuss with the council is how to use the Schultz School property once it is vacant next fall.

Steska said there are a number of civic ways the building could be used, and he hopes council members will have some ideas.

"We would prefer to sell the building because we will have no educational use for it next year," Steska said. "Maybe the council members will have some ideas."

Steska thinks the council and school board will work well together on the project.

"I expect it will be a pleasant evening," he said. "The city has always been easy to work with."
