The Cape Girardeau City Council voted Monday night to change how the city deals with delinquent utility bills.

City policy was to disconnect water service to customers with delinquent bills of $10 or more. The council agreed to a city staff recommendation to raise the cutoff level to $15.

Concerns were raised last month after the city cut water service to a southside church over an $11.35 delinquent bill.

The council also amended the policy regarding after-hours reconnection fees, on the recommendation of the city staff.
