Alan Hunter, an area engineer at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers office at 113 W. Main in Jackson, recently took the time to explain how the office helps local areas control floods through sandbagging, maintaining flood walls and finding the equipment to get the job done.

The most recent job completed was the Ste. Genevieve flood control project. It consisted of a three-mile-long levee, a pump station and two closure structures. Closure structures are built to close the railroad off against the river when it rises too high.

The project helped the Corps win last year's Mississippi Valley Partnering Award for trust, responsibility and understanding construction through partnering.

Army Col. Michael Morrow of St. Louis attended the Jackson office's ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 5. The Corps actually opened its office in the old Sander's Hardware building June 28. The office had been in the Federal Building in Cape Girardeau previously.
