OLIVE BRANCH, Ill. -- A coroner's inquest has been ordered into the death of an Olive Branch man, found dead in a motel room Thursday at the Horseshoe Lake Inn.
A preliminary autopsy report indicates Jerry Merryman, 38, died at 8:35 a.m. Thursday as the result of a gunshot wound, said Alexander County coroner David Barkett.
Merryman, a father of three, was a maintenance engineer at the motel.
Barkett said further post-mortem tests are planned.
The autopsy was performed by a forensic pathologist in Evansville, Ind.
The Alexander County sheriff's office refused to comment about the status of the investigation. No suspects are in custody.
At the coroner's request, the Illinois State Police are aiding in the homicide investigation.
Merryman's funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Crain Funeral Home in Tamms, Ill., with burial will be in East Prairie Memorial Park in East Prairie, Mo. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
