The Cape Girardeau Municipal Band will open its 1992 season tonight, under the direction of Jon Fisher. This marks the 66th concert season under the sponsorship of the city of Cape Girardeau.
The band will perform 12 free Wednesday evening concerts at the band shell in Capaha Park. The season ends Aug. 19. Each concert begins at 8 p.m.
This also marks the 15th year that Fisher has directed the band. He played clarinet in the band for eight years, and was a high school band director in Iowa, Springfield, Mo., and Cape Central High School. He is currently employed by TJ Enterprises, a printing and audio/video production and music publishing company in Cape Girardeau.
The municipal band will continue its celebrity guest conduct program this year. For the first concert, Cape Girardeau Mayor Gene Rhodes will lead the band. He will conduct the appropriate "His Honor" March.
Special guest performers will be the award-winning Central High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Ron Nall.
The first concert musical program includes: "Burst of Flame Concert March," "A Festive Overture," "Trumpets Ole'" featuring the trumpet section, Gershwin selections, "Begin the Beguine," and selections from the Broadway musical "Oklahoma."
The public is invited to bring a lawn chair and enjoy this free concert in Capaha Park tonight.
