On Thursday night, the Cape Girardeau Public Library is hosting an event about community policing and the Cape Girardeau police will hold its final neighborhood roll call of the year. On Thursday night, the Cape Girardeau Public Library is hosting an event about community policing and the Cape Girardeau police will hold its final neighborhood roll call of the year.

Cape Girardeau police chief Wes Blair will be part of a panel that includes Southeast Missouri State professors, students and a retired Cape Girardeau police officer for "Community Policing: The Intersection of Black and Blue Lives Matter." The event is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at 711 N. Clark St. Dr. Raleigh Blasdell, assistant professor for the department of criminal justice & sociology at Southeast, will moderate the panel.

Other panelists include Dr. Shonta Smith, associate professor in the elementary, early and special education department at Southeast; Dr. Hamner Hill, chairman of the department of political science, philosophy and religion at Southeast; Ike Hammonds, retired Cape Girardeau police officer; and Southeast students Justin Robinson and Bennett Hendrix. Panelists will discuss ways to build trust between law enforcement officials and local communities.

The neighborhood roll call event begins with food and drinks at 6 p.m. at Bi-State at 612 S. Sprigg St. Actual roll calls will begin at 7 p.m.
