Owen gets doctorate in political science

Stephen S. Owen of Radford, Va., formerly of Cape Girardeau, has completed a doctor of philosophy degree in political science. He is the son of B. Ray and Sally Owen of Cape Girardeau.

The degree was conferred at graduation ceremonies held in late May at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Owen also holds a master of arts in political science from the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

He is a 1996 summa cum laude graduate of Southeast Missouri State University with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. He currently is an assistant professor of criminal justice at Radford University in Radford, Va.

In addition to teaching, Owen has made numerous presentations at national Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and American Society of Criminology conferences and has published several articles in professional criminal justice publications.

He also serves as Webmaster for Radford's Criminal Justice Department.

Horse show to benefit Diabetes Youth Fund

The Midwest Regional Futurity and Heartland Jubilee Horse Show will be held Saturday at Flickerwood Arena near Jackson. This show will benefit the Diabetes Youth Fund at Southeast Missouri Hospital. Last year, the show netted $4,000 for Southeast's diabetes programs.

The day's activities will include a silent auction with a number of items donated by area businesses and individuals. Concessions will be available. Tickets are $2 per person and available at the door. Children under 6 admitted free.

Civil War Round Table to meet Sunday

The Cape Girardeau County Chapter of the Civil War Round Table will meet Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Fellowship Room at Hanover Lutheran Church, 2949 Perryville Rd. Guest speaker Herb Wickham of Jackson, Mo., will be addressing the topic of "Missouri's Military in the Civil War." Those who are interested in the historical events surrounding the War Between the States are invited to attend.

Pachyderm meeting scheduled for today

Cape Girardeau County officers will be discussing the state of Cape Girardeau County at a meeting of the Southeast Missouri Pachyderm Club, 7 p.m. today at the Holiday Inn. Presiding Commissioner Gerald Jones, Auditor Weldon Macke, Collector Diane Diebold and Treasurer Bill Reynolds will be addressing the state of the county and answering questions from those in attendance. The meeting is open to the public.

Two Zonta members attend convention

Cheryl Hill and Jeannie Van de Ven attended the 2002 Zonta International 56th Convention in Gothenburg, Sweden, from June 28 through July 4. Hill and Van De Ven represented the Zonta Club of Cape Girardeau Area, District 7.

Over 1,300 Zonta delegates from 70 countries and geographical areas attended the conference, titled "Building Zonta in the 21st Century: Inspired by the Challenge of Change."

Farm Safety Day to feature prizes

The Cape County Junior Leaders are hosting their 4th Annual Farm Safety Day Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the 4-H Shelter in Arena Park. This day is designed to teach kids about home and farm safety. There will be refreshments and free prizes.

Post M family picnic will be in park

Cape Girardeau Post M of the Travelers Protective Association will hold a family picnic at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Shelter 8, Cape Girardeau County Park. Pork steak will be served. The cost is $4 per person. This is the last picnic of the season, and members are encouraged to attend and bring a prospective member.

SEMO Fair Pageant set for Sept. 8

The SEMO Fair Pageant will be held Sept. 8 at the R&R Tent on the SEMO Fairgrounds in Cape Girardeau. The pageant will begin at 3 p.m. There are six age divisions in the pageant taking in ages 2 through 22.

Competition includes pageant wear or party dress in the first four divisions. The two older divisions include sportswear and evening gown. The interview competition will be for the oldest division only.

All contestants will receive a certificate of participation. Prize packages include crowns, trophies, sashes, savings bonds and other prizes. In the miss division, the entry fee will be paid to the Sedalia State Fair Pageant.
