Haircut proceeds will go to victims of tornado

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Floyd Penny of Floyd the Barber barbershop in Marble Hill, will donate proceeds from haircuts given between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday to victims of the April 28 tornado that hit Marble Hill.

The Church of God in Cape Girardeau will distribute the funds. For information, call Penny at 334-2491 or the church at 334-1554.

Baseball team invites dogs, food donations

The third annual Dog Day at Capaha Park will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday during the Southeast Missouri State University baseball game against Eastern Illinois.

Baseball fans and pet owners are encouraged to bring their dogs to the park to receive free food, prizes and dog bathing. Dr. Cynthia Sprigg, a local veterinarian, will provide microchip identification. For information, call sports marketing at the university at 986-6842.

Community spring garage sale Saturday

The Community Spring Garage Sale will be held from 8 to noon Saturday at the Osage Centre in Cape Girardeau.

The event is sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department.

Animal fair, events slated Saturday at Kelso Feed

The third annual Kelso Feed Animal Fair will be held at Kelso Feed from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday. A highlight event is the pet contest, to be held at 6 p.m.

"Big Thunder," the world's largest toad, will be at the fair, along with other animals from Jurrock's Zoo of Cape Girardeau. The Cape Shrine Club will have clowns at the fair. Proceeds from the fair go the Shriners Children's Hospital in St. Louis.

Pig roast to raise funds for MDA set for June 27

The fourth annual Muscular Dystrophy Association pig roast will be held from 3 p.m. to closing June 27 at Diana's Lounge in Sikeston, Mo.

The cost is $3 for the meal. Proceeds will benefit the Twin Rivers Chapter of MDA.

Spring charity horse show planned at Flickerwood

The Mid-American Spring Charity Horse Show to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., will be held at Flickerwood Arena near Jackson May 16, 17 and 18.

Walking horse classes will be held over the three-day period, said Rodger Weaver, show chairman.

"We expect to have horses here from several surrounding states," he said.

Phil Snodgrass, of Mount Carmel, Tenn., will judge the walking horse classes.

Show time will be 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with a special 1 p.m. matinee show Saturday.

The show is sponsored by ESA International, a philanthropic service organization with more than 1,000 chapters in the United States. Since 1972, ESA members have raised more than $50 million for St. Jude's Hospital.

Vintage cars on parade

More than 100 vintage cars will participate in an antique car parade from the Drury Lodge to Main Street in downtown Cape Girardeau May 19.

Participating in the 2 p.m. parade will be 84 members of the Veteran Motor Car Club of America, which will be in Cape Girardeau on a segment of its 2002 Great River Delta Tour.

"This will represent a great alignment of vintage cars," said Dave Jackson, president of the Capaha Car Antique Club. A number of Model A and Model T Fords, along with a Pearce Arrow and couple of 1929 Cadillacs will be in the visiting VMCCA group. Also participating in the event will be the MG Club of St. Louis and the Capaha Car Club of Cape Girardeau.

The parade Route will start at the Drury Lodge, to Mount Auburn Road, left on William, left on Kingshighway, right on Broadway to Main and Water streets.

The tour will then travel to Trail of Tears Park, and back to Water Street for a block party.

From Cape Girardeau, the VMCCA tour will head to Memphis.

Stars and Stripes Museum fish fry May 25

The Stars and Stripes Museum and Library at Bloomfield will sponsor a fund-raising fish fry from 5 to 8 p.m. May 25 on the grounds of the museum.

The dinner includes fish, french fries, slaw, hushpuppies and tea and lemonade.

The Jaycees Bayou Cookers of East Prairie will provide the food. Cost is $8.50 for adults and $7.50 for children under 12.

Genealogy Society meeting to feature author

Lorena Shell Eaker will be guest speaker at the Cape Girardeau County Genealogy Society meeting at 7:30 p.m. June 22 at the Riverside Regional Library in Jackson.

Eaker has written books on the Eaker family and German-speaking people west of the Catawba River in North Carolina. She has a forthcoming book on the Frederick Wise family.

The Cape County Genealogy Society has about 200 members. Information is available by contacting Bill Eddleman, 335-1507.

Netherlands visitors to attend reunion

The Eeftink/Eftink Family Reunion will be held June 9 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Leopold.

Fran and Willemien Beusink teMolder and a son, Romuald, will attend the reunion from the Netherlands. Willemien's mother's maiden name was Eeftink.

Rainbow Alliance receives grant and award

Southeast Missouri State University's Rainbow Alliance student organization has received a Student Programming in Excellence Award and a $500 programming grant from the Standing Committee for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Awareness of the American College Personnel Association of Higher Education.

The Rainbow Alliance, established last fall, was nominated for the National Coming Out Day program held in October at Southeast.
