Smelterville residents hold reunion Saturday

Former residents of south Cape Girardeau, an area formerly known as Smelterville, will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday in Cape Girardeau's Cherokee Park. Everyone is invited to bring a dish to the reunion.

Old Bollinger Countians to meet Saturday

The Old Bollinger Countians will meet at noon on Monday at Ryan's Family Steak House in Cape Girardeau.

Big Brothers Big Sisters starts another school year

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri has been in Cape Girardeau County for two years. Since opening in September of 2000, the agency has served over 150 children in one-on-one mentoring relationships in this area.

Site-based after-school programs at Blanchard, Clippard, Franklin and Jefferson elementaries have moved into their second year. Plans are being made for new programs in both Alma Schrader Elementary and the Cape Girardeau Middle School.

Volunteers are always needed to continue serving area children who need a positive role model. For more information, call 339-0184.

A program on early literacy set for Saturday

United Way's Success By 6 program and the Cape Girardeau Public Library will be hosting a program for parents and children on the importance of early literacy from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Cape Area Family Resource Center, 1202 S. Sprigg.

Gun and knife show to be held this weekend

Missouri Gun and Knife, a Cape Girardeau company, will host a show this weekend at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau. The show will be held Friday from 4 to 8 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $3, children under 10 and women are free. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Girl Scouts to award women in leadership roles

The Girl Scouts of Otahki Council will be giving out the 2002 Women's Impact Awards at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in Southeast Missouri State University's Dempster Hall. Those receiving awards include Rep. Jo Ann Emerson (R-Mo.), Robyn Hosp, Mary Ann Maloney, Carrie Smith Padgett and Kathy Swan.

The impact awards breakfast will honor the five recipients who through their leadership roles have made a difference and serve as role models for all women and girls.

The featured speaker is Julie Gibson, a lawyer in Kansas City, Mo. Gibson is a native of Cape Girardeau and a graduate of SEMO university.

Morton-McNeely family reunion set for Sunday

The Morton-McNeely family reunion will be held Sunday in the Jackson City Park, Shelter No. 1. It will begin at 11 a.m., with a basket dinner at noon. All descendants of George Pink and Ollie Corrine McNeely Morton and their extended families are invited to attend. Bring photos and family history information.

Capaha Fire Truck Rally scheduled for Sunday

Celebrate Fire Prevention Week a little early at the Capaha Fire Truck Rally on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Capaha Park in Cape Girardeau. Activities for children beginning around noon will offer an opportunity to have fun as well as learn about fire safety.

Many games and activities are planned. Children can also dress in fire gear and have their pictures taken. There will be old and new fire trucks to explore, a fire memorabilia flea market and concessions available.

Poetry Coffee House to meet in Capaha Park

The Poetry Coffee House will take on new surroundings for its Monday meeting. Participants will meet at 7 p.m. in Capaha Park with some verses celebrating the summer season. Readers and listeners are welcome.

Extension to hold meeting on new farm bill

The United States Department of Agriculture and the University of Missouri Outreach and Extension will hold a public meeting on the 2002 Farm Bill at 7:30 p.m. Monday. The meeting will be held in the lower level of the Cape Girardeau County Extension Center in Jackson, 684 West Jackson Trail.

Topics will include changes in the new farm bill: direct and counter-cyclical payments, the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and the Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP).

Martial arts classes for disabled begin Monday

The SEMO Alliance for Disability Independence (SADI), Inc. and Jackson Physical Therapy is sponsoring a martial arts program for people ages 5 to adult with disabilities. The program will be held in the SEMO alliance community room. Participants must have a disabling condition to take part in the program.

Classes start Monday, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., and will continue each Monday until Nov. 18. The instructor will be Alan Williams, a licensed physical therapist with Jackson Physical Therapy and a third-degree black belt.
