Taxpayer bill of rights presentation held today
A presentation and question-and-answer session on the tax-payer bill of rights will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. today at the Jackson Senior Citizen Center, 2690 Travelers Way in Jackson. The Southeast Missouri Pachyderm Club will have a meal at 6:15 p.m. tonight at Dexter Bar-B-Que in Cape Girardeau, with a meeting at 7 p.m. Guest speaker following will be Dr. Michael Wulfers.
The Civil War Roundtable will take a fall trip to Fort Benton and the Stony Battery residence of members Scott and Patti House Saturday. Meet at 7:30 a.m. at the Hanover Lutheran Church parking lot, 2949 Perryville Road, Cape Girardeau for departure by 8 a.m. Plans are to be arriving back in Cape by midafternoon.
Shere Khan, the percussion ensemble at Cape Girardeau Central Middle School, will hold a dinner and silent auction Saturday to raise money for the group's trip to Omaha, Neb., on Nov. 10 to perform at a national music conference. The chicken and dumplings and kettle beef dinner with homemade desserts will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. Auction items include gift certificates, movies passes and a portrait package. A highlight of the auction will be a framed photograph of the Shere Khan ensemble with two manuscripts of original music they will perform at the music conference. Tickets are available at the door or in advance from Shere Khan members. Shere Khan's 43 fifth- and sixth-graders perform on recorders, drums and African xylophones and are directed by Central Middle School music teacher Pam Dumey.
Contributions of quilt blocks will be created from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Holiday Inn, 2300 Reed Station Parkway in Carbondale, Ill. The quilt blocks will be donated to Project Linus, making larger quilts for children of families in the Southern Illinois community who have experienced tragedies. The quilts will be donated to local fire stations and women's shelters to give to the children. All skill levels are welcome. Machines and supplies will be on hand. The Illinois chapter of the Trail of Tears Association will hold a fall general membership meeting at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Vienna Public Library, 401 Poplar Street, Vienna, Ill. The program "Politics of Cherokee Removal: Events and Personalities" will be be presented by Rowena McClinton, associate professor at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in the Department of Historical Studies. The Shawnee District of Boy Scouts of America is hosting a Cub-o-ree at the Jackson City Park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 30. Cub Scouts may participate in activities include shooting BB guns, archery, fishing, crafts and games. Any first- through fifth-grade boy who is interested in joining Cub Scouts may also join in the fun. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. There is no charge for the event and lunch will be provided. The Cape Girardeau Public Library will hold a senior fair from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 30 for those age 60 and over, their families and caregivers. The afternoon will feature free programs, music and informational materials. Short presentations by local agencies will be ongoing.
The Sullinger/Hitt reunion will be held at the Fairview General Baptist Church near Advance, Mo., with a potluck dinner at 1 p.m. Oct. 1. All family and friends are invited.

Special events include crafts, food stands, baby contest, king and queen contest, live music, rides, soap making, apple butter and cider making, children's games, animal petting pen, mazes and more.
A fall poker run will be held rain or shine with registration at 10 a.m. Oct. 8 at Minor's Harley-Davidson in Scott City; last bike will be out at noon. Bikes are due back in by 4 p.m. All motorcycles, cars and trucks welcome. First 50 to sign in receive a free patch.
