Auxiliary organizations seek new members

  • The VFW Post 3838 Auxiliary meets at 7 p.m. the second Thursday monthly at the VFW Post, 849 N. Kingshighway, Cape Girardeau. Wives, mothers, spouses, widows, sisters and daughters of veterans of foreign wars are eligible for membership and are encouraged to join.   • The Mason O. Yarbrough Marine Corps League Auxiliary meets at 7 p.m. the third Thursday monthly at the VFW Post, 849 N. Kingshighway, Cape Girardeau. Wives, mothers, stepmothers, widows, sisters, daughters, grandmothers of Marines or wives of FMF Corpsmen are eligible for membership and encouraged to join. Parenting support group meets Wednesday

A support group meets monthly at Cape Girardeau County Extension office for grandparents or other relatives parenting children other than their own. The next meeting, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, will present a program on "Building Assets" presented by Donna Taake, 4-H youth specialist with University of Missouri Extension. Anyone raising children other than their own is invited to attend. Call the Extension office at 243-3581 before attendance. The office is at 684 W. Jackson Trail, off Highway 25 South in Jackson. Future meeting dates are Sept. 12, Oct. 10, Nov. 7 and Dec. 12.

Conservation farming field day demonstration

An on-the-farm field day with demonstrations from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. will be held Thursday at the Lanpher Farm in Advance, Mo. Hosted by Paul Lanpher, the field day will will feature the new nitrogen applicator knife the local farmer has developed. Cub Scout Pack 36 holds two registration dates

Cub Scout Pack 36 will hold registration at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Sept. 6 at the American Legion Hall in Benton, Mo. For more information, call Doris at (573) 545-3043.

Flea market booth recruitment to help vets

A flea market will be held from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Electrical Connection IBEW facility, 2611 Gebhardt Drive in Cape Girardeau. This street runs west off South Kingshighway south of Highway 74. Schnucks also sponsors the event. Proceeds from the rental of 150 spaces and from the sale of food will benefit the Cape Girardeau Veterans Home. These funds will provide for the personal needs of indigent residents, activities, outings, in-house parties and entertainment. Coffee and donuts will be sold in the morning; hot dogs, hamburgers, pork steaks and soft drinks will be sold at noon. A hot-air balloon, music and raffle items, including chances to win a one-man sail boat, will be available. The rain date is Sept. 9. For more information or registration forms, call 334-5491.

Missouri Arts Council plans bus trip to St. Louis

The Missouri Arts Council is sponsoring a bus trip to the Contemporary Art Museum to view the work of Maya Lin and the exhibit Symbols of Power: Napoleon and the Art of the Empire Style. The bus will leave at 8 a.m. Sept. 14 from the parking lot near Steve & Barry's at West Park Mall and will return around 8 p.m. Tickets are discounted for arts council members. Seating is limited. College High School holds reunion

The College High School 2007 reunion will be held Sept. 22 at the Cape Girardeau Knights of Columbus Hall on Spanish Street. Members of classes 1959 through 1965 are invited. The theme for this year's reunion is "Rollin' on the River." Festivities will be from 2 to 10 p.m. All local classmates are urged to greet those from out of town. The reunion committee has been unable to locate JoAnn Coffey, Carolyn Dunning, Carol Kenyon, Gloria King, Larry Maevers, Jane Ownbey, Diane McCoy, Pat Thomas and Nelda Sue Sides. Steinbeck, Lorimer, Pole family reunion planned

Descendants of the William or Daniel Steinbeck, Zilthy Pole or Agatha Lorimer families, formerly of Cape Girardeau, are invited to a reunion at 11 a.m. Sept. 22 at the Kentucky Convention Cener. The event will begin with a potluck meal. For more information, call (270) 642-2145.
