Center offers fishing, canoeing programs; Cape Democrats group meets next week; Ice cream social to benefit Brazeau Historical Society

Jackson Municipal Band playing tonight in park

The Jackson Municipal Band will hold its weekly concert in at 8 p.m. today in the city park. Special guests include Exit 45, a bluegrass band from Marion, Ill. The band's portion will feature the saxophone section. Other components of the program include Sousa marches, selections from "Mary Poppins" and the movie "Titanic."

Center offers fishing, canoeing programs

  • "Fishin' with the family," a program for ages 6 and older, will be offered from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Campus Nature Center. Master fisherman Fred Meystedt will teach the best techniques for cleaning, catching and cooking crappie, bluegill and trout. The program begins and ends at the Nature Center, with fishing scheduled at the large pond in Cape County Park North. Poles are available for participant use.

* Canoeing for youths ages 12 to 17 will be offered by the Cape Girardeau Conservation Campus Center from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Life jackets, canoes, paddles and transportation to and from the center will be provided. Canoeing, tips and techniques will be taught on the waters of the Lake Girardeau Conservation Area. Cape Democrats group meets next week

The Cape Girardeau Area Democrat meet-up group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Commerce Bank, 1605 Broadview St., lower level. The group meets every second Wednesday of the month. For more information, call Linda at 243-5128.

Ice cream social to benefit Brazeau Historical Society

Homemade vanilla ice cream, toppings, desserts and sandwiches will be available from 3 to 6:30 p.m. July 23 at Brazeau Community Hall pavilion. Music will be provided by the Saxony Hills Band. The event will benefit the Brazeau Historical Society. For more information, call (573) 824-5407.
