At 1 p.m. Wednesday the Jackson Public Library will have a party to celebrate prekindergarten to sixth-grade children's completion of reading 20 or more books. At 2 p.m. magician Marty Hahne will appear. Everyone is invited.
The Cape River Heritage Museum features a special display on the Missouri state flag, designed and created in Cape Girardeau, and other exhibits reflecting Cape Girardeau's early heritage. A "hands on" area regarding life on the Mississippi River is popular with children and an exhibit focusing on local police and fire history includes a full-size working fire engine. The museum at the corner of Independence and Frederick streets is open for tours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays in August. Call 334-0405 for appointments or for more information.
Aa summer wildflower walk is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Trail of Tears State Park. Walkers should meet at Sheppard's Point Trailhead. Bring water and insect repellant. At 7 p.m. an overlook discovery adventure will include a sneak preview at the Visitor Center, followed by an evening visit to the overlook to experience it on your own. A discovery hunt will be available for those interested, which involves walking along Overlook Road up a steep hill.
The Criddle, Davenport, Moore and Stroder families will have a family-style potluck lunch at noon Sunday at the Jackson Knights of Colombus Hall on the lower level. Doors open at 11 a.m.
The Scott County Women in Agriculture will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the USDA Office on Highway 77 in Benton. Derek Medler and James Hanner Jr., with Lucas Florist in Dexter, Mo., will give a presentation on floral arranging. All women are invited. The goal of the group is to educate others about agriculture and to provide an atmosphere of fun, fellowship and support. For more information, contact Kay Dover at the USDA Center at 545-9027.
Cape Friends of Traditional Music and Dance will hold a contra dance from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church, 101 N. Fountain St., Cape Girardeau. There will be live music by Ben Goodier (fiddle), Denise Dowling (hammer dulcimer) and Steve Juhlin (Irish flat drum). All moves are taught and the dances walked through. Everyone is welcome and no partner, costume or experience is necessary. A donation is requested, discounted for young dancers to age 16.
