Congressional staffers making stops in area
Staff from U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson's Missouri offices will visit with constituents today at the Bollinger County Library in Marble Hill, Mo., from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and then at city hall in Advance, Mo., from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. They will be at city hall in Chaffe, Mo., from 9 to 10 a.m. on July 28.
The 36th annual CROP luncheon and sale will begin at 8 a.m. Friday, with lunch served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Centenary Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau. Tickets will be sold at the door, and carry-outs will be available. Baked goods, jams and jellies, canned goods, plants and children's items will be for sale. Proceeds will provide a scholarship to Young Life camp, a Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center scholarship and fund Church World Service projects.
The Jackson Municipal Band will hold its weekly concert at 8 p.m. today at the band shell in Jackson City Park. Entrance to the band shell parking lot is on Route D. Guests include the Roethemeyer Trio. The performance will include marches, a collection of hits by Neil Diamond and selections from "Shrek 2."
A picnic lunch, auction and centennial idol contest will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Circle Park in Chaffee, Mo. In case of rain, the contest will be held at the high school activity center.
The Scott County Historical and Genealogy Society will have its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Riverside Regional Library in Benton, Mo. The guest speaker for the evening will be Jim Palmer of the Missouri Department of Conservation. He will speak on the geology of Scott County and the effects of the 1811-1812 earthquakes. The meeting is open to the public.
Neighborhood Connections will meet at 6 p.m. July 21 at Christ Episcopal Church in Cape Girardeau. The group will proceed with agenda items at 7 p.m., which include a Neighborhood Watch program and other projects. Neighborhood Connections is made up of renters, property owners and businesses in the area bounded by Sprigg, North, and Independence streets, but those who live outside the designated area are encouraged to attend. The purpose of Neighborhood Connections is to make the area a friendlier, safer and more attractive place.
The Jackson Senior Center Board of Directors is inviting the community to tour the new senior center at 2690 Travelers Way on July 21 between 5 and 7 p.m. Hors d'oeuvres will be served.
A benefit dinner, dance and silent auction to assist Martha Siebert Friese in paying medical expenses not covered by insurance will be held July 23 at Immaculate Conception School cafeteria in Jackson. The dinner will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m.; the dance will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Free will donations. The event is co-sponsored by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Chapter 30281.
The second annual customer appreciation day at Jackson Recycling Center, at 508 Eastview Court, will be held from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. July 30. Refreshments will be provided to all bringing recyclables that day, and entry forms for the "Made in the Shade" contest will be available. Winners will receive free weekly collection service at home in August. The contest is limited to those living within Jackson city limits. Mayor Paul Sander, city administrator Jim Roach and other officials will be present from 10 a.m. to noon to helps unload recyclables. The Nussbaum family reunion will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 31 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tilsit. A basket dinner will be at 12:30 p.m.
The American Legion Post 178 Auxiliary in Villa Ridge, Ill., will have a flag retirement ceremony Saturday. Unservicable flags can be properly disposed of at the ceremony, which begins at 5 p.m. Bluegrass and gospel music, along will pie, ice cream and other food, will follow at 6 p.m. Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs. At the 71st consecutive Conrad reunion held recently it was decided to print a new Conrad genealogy book.
