Retired employee group seeks nominations
The National Association of Retired Federal Employees is accepting nominations for an area Employee of the Year and a Retired Employee of the Year.
Charles A. Henshaw said winners will be recognized at a ceremony Aug. 7 at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center.
Nominations may be sent to Henshaw at 1512 Briarcliff Drive, Cape Girardeau, Mo., 63701.
'Fish for a Wish' benefit planned for Saturday
The third annual "Fish for a Wish" fish fry to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Cape County Park, North Pavilion 4.
The event will feature all-you-can-eat" catfish.
Tickets are $7.50 for adults and $3.50 for children 10 and younger.
The day's program includes live entertainment, a silent auction, fishing lure demonstrations, clowns, a boat giveaway, Missouri Department of Conservation fishing clinic between 5 and 6 p.m., craft booths, animals from Jurrocks Park Zoo, face painting and games for children.
Leopold KC to hold dinner, dance June 22
The St. Isidore Council 5898 Leopold Knights of Columbus will sponsor a pork steak dinner and dance on June 22 to raise funds for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.
A barbecue pork steak dinner will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, with a dance, featuring the Ronnie Nanney Sound System, starting at 8 p.m.
Date set for counseling center golf tourney
The Community Counseling Center Foundation, headquartered at Cape Girardeau, has announced the date for its third annual benefit golf tournament. It will be held Oct. 11 at the Kokopelli Golf Club at Marion, Ill.
The golf tournament will be an 18-hole, four-person scramble.
The tournament fee is $85 per player and includes 18 holes of golf, cart, lunch and beverage. Tee time is 1 p.m., with lunch at noon.
Co-chairmen for the event are John Grimm and John Harding.
Proceeds from these events will go to the foundation for providing improved facilities, equipment and services for people with mental illness. The center serves Cape Girardeau, Bollinger, Madison, Ste. Genevieve and Perry counties.

AARP plans course in driving safely
The AARP 55 Alive Safety Driving course is planned for 1 to 5 p.m. on July 9 and 10, in rooms 101 and 102 at Southeast Missouri Hospital. Participants must attend both sessions to pass the course and receive credit on their insurance.
Advance registration for the course closes July 4. Cost for the course is $10.
Robert W. Harper of Jackson is instructor for the two-day course.
Trail of Tears schedules events for weekend
"Fishing Basics" is one of three topics to be discussed at seminars sponsored by the Trail of Tears State Park this weekend.
The fishing program will be held at Boutin Lake at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Participants are urged to bring a fishing pole.
Other weekend topics include "Starry Skies" and "Spider Sniff."
Participants will meet at Westcoat Shelter near the river at 9 p.m. Friday to discuss stars.
Spiders will be the topic for an 8 p.m. session Saturday, to be held at the visitor center.
Children 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult for all programs.

Mended Hearts group plans picnic June 18
St. Francis Medical Center Mended Hearts Chapter 261 will hold its annual chapter picnic at 6:30 p.m. June 18 at Cape County Park Shelter 20.
All past and present chapter members and their families are invited. Meat will be provided.
