PWP announces weekend events

An orientation and general meeting for Parents Without Partners will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Riverside Regional Library in Jackson.

A garage sale to finance Parents Without Partners children's activities will be held at 6 a.m. Saturday at 2812 Hilltop in Cape Girardeau.

At 11 a.m. Saturday there will be a Soapbox Derby/Eat Out at Blanchard School on Sprigg Street and McDonald's on Broadway in Cape Girardeau. Call 335-0797 for more information.

Jackson band will play new composition Monday

Jackson High School's Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony will hold their annual spring concert at 7 p.m. Monday at the old gymnasium.

The highlight of the evening will be the world premier of a composition written for the Jackson band. Commissioned by the band, "The Chase" was written by world-famous band composer David R. Holsinger.

The concert is free and everyone is cordially invited to attend.

No More Trash Day events held today

An awareness event for No More Trash Day, a statewide campaign to abolish litter, will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Notre Dame Regional High School cafeteria.

Cape Girardeau Mayor Jay Knudtson will present an award to the Notre Dame science club, which has been picking up litter along a two-mile stretch of Route K for over a year.

Oliver House open house scheduled for Sunday

The Jackson Heritage Association will hold the Oliver House Museum Spring Open House beginning with a guided tour at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at 224 E. Adams St. in Jackson.

Cape Farmers' Market opens fifth season today

Located at 2001 Independence in Cape Girardeau, the Farmers' Market opens for its 18th season from 3 to 7 p.m. today. The market is open every Thursday from May to October, rain or shine, at the Plaza Galleria parking lot.

Seasonal produce and fruits, arts and crafts, baked goods, honey, cut flowers and plants are offered.

Miller family reunion scheduled for Saturday

Descendants of John F. Miller and Lucinda Robbins Miller will gather at noon Saturday at Cape County Park, pavilion No. 3, in Cape Girardeau. Family and friends are encouraged to bring a potluck meal, tableware, beverages and lawn chairs, old photos and memories. Call Diane Runnels at 243-5306 for more information.

The Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce's First Friday Coffee is planned for 7:30 a.m. Friday at the Show Me Center. For nonmembers there is a charge.

VFW announces buddy poppy days

Upholding the tradition, Mayor Paul Sander purchased the first buddy poppy from the Jackson Memorial VFW Post 10495 and its Auxiliary. Buddy poppies will be for sale at various locations in the area Friday and Saturday. There will be more than 16 million buddy poppies assembled by 500,00 volunteers this year. The VFW motto, "Honor the Dead By Helping The Living" has greater meaning when individuals donate when purchasing a poppy.

Historic alliance announces program, tour

The Southeast Missouri Historic Preservation Alliance will hold a program titled "Using Maps" from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Cape Girardeau County Archive Center. Call 204-2331 for more information.

Earth Day festival scheduled for Saturday

The annual Earth Day celebration held by The Preserving Our Planet Society of Southeast Missouri State University will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday on Academic Terraces at the corner of Normal and Pacific streets on campus. Bands will play throughout the day. Students and merchants will have booths set up to provide information. Free food will be provided. Call 332-7271 for more information.

Preserving the history of war aviation

Celebrating the centennial of powered flight, a search is on for any servicemen or women involved in aviation during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Fred Schmucker, member of Experimental Aircraft Association, is interested in videotaping these individuals for historical purposes.

From 7 a.m. to noon Saturday, a fly-in, drive-in pancake breakfast will be held to raise funds for the airshow. Recruits for the interviews are welcome to a free breakfast at this event. For transportation contact Schmucker at 339-7364.

National Scrapbook Day events set for Saturday

Since 1995, National Scrapbook Day continues to spark the tradition of creating scrapbook photo albums. This year's theme is "Memory Savers: Having a ball remembering it all." The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. For more information, call Mollie Miranda at 243-2353.

Cape's public library to close on Sundays

The Cape Girardeau Public Library will have no Sunday hours from May until September.

From 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday a program and reception will be held in the Hirsch Community Room. The topic is the opening of the Lewis and Clark Map Exhibit.

Bank sells cookbook to benefit cancer research

A Relay for Life team, including employees of Wood and Huston Bank, have put together a cookbook titled "Cooking Up A Cure," compiled from family, friends', employees' and customers' favorite recipes. Proceeds from the sale of the cookbook will benefit the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life fundraiser.
