Humane Society adoptions double at open house

The Youth United Way and the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri recently held an open house for all ages to promote pet adoption and volunteerism. Events coordinator Cheryle Dillon said that adoptions doubled on that day. The Youth United Way, which received a $900 grant from the Missouri Community Service Commission to fund the event, operated the various activities planned at the event and promoted volunteerism. Scott County Women in Agriculture meet today

The Scott County Women in Agriculture will meet at 9 a.m. today at the USDA office on Highway 77 in Benton. All women are invited. Individuals with an interest in gardening, cooking, farming, family activities and helping the community will enjoy fun, fellowship and support. Salvation Army Men's Club will hold auction

The Salvation Army Men's Club will hold an auction at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Salvation Army building, 701 Good Hope St., Cape Girardeau. Gift certificates and items from area businesses will be auctioned. A concession stand will be available. Call 335-7000 for more information.

Illinois train club to hold model railroad show, sale

The Southern Illinois Train Club will hold a model railroad show and sale from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at John A. Logan College in Carterville, Ill. There is an admission fee. Children under 12 may enter free with an adult paid admission. The show features vendor tables and operating layouts in H.O. scale, N scale, G scale and Z scale. River Heritage Quilters hold trunk show Monday

The River Heritage Quilters will have a quilt trunk show beginning with a social hour at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center.

Spring home and garden tour in Charleston

The 38th annual Dogwood-Azalea Festival in Charleston, Mo., will feature a home and garden tour sponsored by the Mississippi County Historical Society. Three Charleston homes and spring gardens, weather permitting, will be toured from 1 to 4 p.m. April 14 and 15. Tickets may be purchased at the Mississippi County Historical Society's Moore Home, 403 N. Main St. Individuals may also visit the Moore Home throughout the festival until April 17.

Jackson chamber holds golf tourney, showcase

The Jackson Chamber of Commerce golf tournament is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. April 15 at Bent Creek Golf Course. Two spots remain open. The annual business showcase will be held at 9 a.m. April 16, at the old Sander Hardware building on East Jackson Boulevard. Call the chamber at 243-8131 to register.

Noon Optimists sponsor Safety City classes

The Jackson Noon Optimists will sponsor their Safety City USA child safety classes from 9 to 11 a.m. and noon to 2 p.m. on May 7 and May 14 at Jackson City Park. Enrollment will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 16, at Main Street Fitness in Jackson. The course, geared for ages kindergarten to third grade, teaches youths about traffic awareness and preventative measures that could help prevent accidents. Topics include traffic safety regarding bicycles, pedestrians and school buses; seat belt usage; drug awareness; fire safety; and stranger danger. The course is conducted by Jackson Noon Optimist members and the Jackson police and fire departments.

Old Town Cape to hold fund-raising auction

The 18th annual Old Town Cape "Charles Hutson" fund-raising auction will be held at 6 p.m. April 23 at Port Cape's River City Yacht Club, 19 N. Water St. Verbal auction begins at 8 p.m., with a silent auction throughout the evening. Appetizers are free, and a cash bar is available. This is Old Town Cape's largest fundraiser of the year and monies are generated for public firework displays, music festivals, the annual Christmas parade of lights, downtown beautification and restoration projects. Eckankar religion presents workshop

Talks, workshop, discussion and practical tips on dreams and spiritual growth in relation to Eckankar, the religion of the light and sound of God will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. April 24 at Main Street Fitness community room, 410 W. Upcoming Beginning Experience weekend

Beginning Experience, a faith-based, nondenominational, not-for-profit group will hold a weekend for individuals who are dealing with the loss of a significant other. The event is staffed by individuals who have experienced similar situations and will take place Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, April 29 to May 1 at the DePaul Center in Cape Girardeau. Cost includes five meals and lodging. Linens provided. Financial payments can be arranged and no person will be denied attending the weekend because of inability to pay.
