Scott County Women in Agriculture to meet

The Scott County Women in Agriculture will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Depot in Sikeston, Mo., to view the museum and the art exhibits of area high school artists. At 7 p.m. the meeting will continue at Cheers, where the group will have dinner and conduct a brief business meeting focusing on "Farm Day," sponsored for Scott County third-grade students in April. Any women from the area who are interested in joining the organization should feel free to attend. American Legion to sell poppies at Kmart

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 63, with help from Post 63 members, will sell memorial poppies Friday at Kmart, Wal-mart and Bank of America on William Street in Cape Girardeau. The purpose of Poppy Day is to honor the war dead by assisting the living. The poppies are made by patients at Jefferson Barracks Hospital at St. Louis as part of their rehab program.

Optimists to hold March of Dimes Block Party

The Cape Evening Optimists will hold a March of Dimes Block Party from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Missouri Barge Line parking lot across from Port Cape Girardeau. The event will have music, food and prizes. All proceeds will benefit the March of Dimes.

ALS Walk begins Saturday at Arena Park

The ALS walk will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Arena Park's Conservation Shelter. Registration begins at 9 a.m. For more information, call (888) 873-8539 or visit www.alsa-stl.org.

Bikers plan poker run May 6 to help veterans

The seventh annual poker run will begin at 9 a.m. at L&D Patio in McClure, Ill., and end at the Veterans Home at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. The event is an annual Bikers Helping Vets event with a poker run/blessing of the bikes combined with an auction, barbecue, antique car and tractor show, and bike show. There is no charge for poker run entrants, veterans, veterans' family members or employees on duty. An admission charge for others will be used to obtain items to improve residents' quality of life or meet their needs.

Car show planned for Sunday in Ullin, Ill.

The 17th annual Shawnee Community College Car Show will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday on the parking lot on the main campus near Ullin, Ill. For more information, call Clyde Shafer, SCC automotive technology instructor, at (618) 634-3256.

May 8 begins Magnolia Manor spring luncheons

The historic Magnolia Manor will hold the first of its spring luncheons from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 8. The proceeds will go toward maintenance of the manor. Reservations must be made before Saturday. Call (618) 734-0201.

Northern Cherokee Nation, TOLT to meet

The Northern Cherokee Nation of the Old Louisiana Territory will hold a tribal meeting at 10 a.m. May 19 at 811 Broadway, Cape Girardeau. The meeting will be at the Cape Girardeau subtribal office upstairs from the tribal office and gift shop. All tribal members, prospective members and friends of the tribe are urged to come. The group will be discussing and planning future and current events, and its recent petition to the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs for recognition. For more information, call 339-7464.

College Greeks played big part in food drive

Majors Ben and Beth Stillwell of the Salvation Army said Greek fraternities and sororities at Southeast Missouri State University donated more than 33,000 canned food items during April. The organizations are Theta Xi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Gamma Phi Beta, Sigma Tau Gamma, Alpha Delta Pi, Delta Delta Delta, Alpha XI Delta, Delta Chi, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Phi Delta Theta, Alpha Chi Omega and Lambda Chi Alpha.
