The Home Based Training Institute promotes positive parenting by educating parents on ways to interact with their children. Free training by HBTI will be available from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday on childhood depression and anxiety; from 2:30 to 4 p.m. on empowerment strategies; and from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on discipline. Training continues Wednesday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on recognizing and investigating child abuse; and from 10:30 a.m. to noon on home visitor safety. The Cape Girardeau County Chapter of AARP 4041 will meet at 1:30 p.m. today at Grace United Methodist Church at Broadway and Caruthers Avenue. The program will be a candidates forum on school board elections. A drawing for a door prize will be held.
Nearly 400 junior and senior high school students from Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, Perry, Scott and 14 other counties will compete for the chance to advance to the state National History Day competition in Columbia, Mo., on April 16. The National History Day in Missouri district contest will be held by Southeast Missouri State University at the University Center on Friday. The theme is "Communication in History: The Key to Understanding." Students will compete in exhibit, media, performance or historical paper. A complete package including a 10-by-12 Derkson shed, a mulching lawn mower, garden tools, wheelbarrow and $105 in gift certificates from area nurseries will be raffled off May 14 by the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri. The University of Illinois Extension will present "Planning for What If?" from 9 to 10:30 a.m. March 14 at the Union County office in Anna, Ill. Information on how to help protect and manage family assets will be presented by Marie Vicher, consumer and family program coordinator. The program is free and open to the public. Kindergarten registration for the upcoming school year will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. March 15 at Kelso School cafeteria. Parents of children who will be 5 years old before Aug. 1 should bring their child's birth certificate, immunization record and Social Security number. Kindergarten and preschool screenings will be held from 8 a.m. to noon April 6 and 7. Kindergarten screening and enrollment and preschool screening for 3- and 4-year-olds are planned for April 11 at Hobbs Chapel, Highway 177, Cape Girardeau. Appointments are required and can be made by calling the school at 334-3644. Children eligible for kindergarten must be 5 years old before Aug. 1 and parents must present an immunization record, official birth certificate and Social Security card at the time of enrollment. All immunizations must be up to date before children are permitted to attend classes.
Scott City PTO has teamed up with the Business Tech Program to offer 13-month school calendars. Each calendar features a group picture of each grade with all the school events listed.
