Genealogical society to meet at archive center

The Cape Girardeau County Genealogical Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Cape Girardeau County Archive Center, 112 E. Washington St. in Jackson. The program, "History of the Little River Drainage District," will be presented by Larry Dowdy, the district's executive vice president. The archive center will be open at 6:30 p.m. for members' library research. The society meets bimonthly on the fourth Tuesday. Nonmembers are welcome at all meetings. Self-protection course for women offered

A course titled "BodyGuard: Women's Self-Protection" will be offered from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Fitness Plus Studio 2, 150 S. Mount Auburn Road. Training includes psychological aspects, development of a self-protection mindset, breaking holds and grabs, learning effective full-power strikes and kicks, and fighting from standing, seated and prone positions. Relay for Life team to hold casino night

The Mary & Pat's Friends Relay for Life Team will hold a Casino Game Night at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Deerfield Lodge, 210 Deerfield Lane at County Road 313 in Cape Girardeau. The event is for adults only. Donations will be taken at the door to benefit the team. Games begin at 6 p.m. There will be a chicken fry, casino games, an auction and prizes. For those unable to attend, a donation may be made to the American Cancer Society and mailed to 2620 Old Orchard Road, Jackson, Mo., 63755.

Red House Interpretive Center kicks off season

The Red House Interpretive Center will begin its 2008 season with hours from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. April 4, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 5 and noon to 3 p.m. April 6. Docents will be available for tours of the center, its 250-foot mural, historical gardens and gift shop. The Sons of the American Revolution will be on the porch from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 5 for Civil War discussions.
