The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is part of Senior Corps, a network of national service programs that provides older Americans the opportunity to apply their life experience to meeting community needs. At a recent RSVP program, volunteer Ila Niswonger gave a presentation on volunteer experience, its importance, how it has helped her and what the program means to her.
The River Heritage Quilters' Guild will celebrate its 16th birthday tonight. Social hour begins at 6:30 p.m.; meeting will start at 7 p.m. Events include the guild birthday party and bed turning. In observance of the worldwide 86th birthday of the American Legion, the Altenthal-Joerns Post 158 in Jackson will celebrate with a 5:30 p.m. social hour Thursday, followed by a dinner served by the auxiliary at 6:45 p.m. All eligible war veterans of the area are invited to become Legionnaires. The Emotions Anonymous group meets at 7 p.m. Sunday nights at Christ Episcopal Church, 101 N. Fountain St. Emotions Anonymous is a 12-step organization for individuals suffering from problems such as depression, anger, broken or strained relationships, grief, anxiety, low self-esteem, guilt, fatigue, tension, boredom, loneliness, worry, compulsive behavior and a variety of other emotional issues.
Retha Felkner, worthy grand matron of the Grand Chapter of Missouri, Order of the Eastern Star, will make an official inspection of the chapters of the 49th district at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Cape Girardeau Masonic Temple. She will be assisted by the worthy grand patron, Creed Marriott. Joyce Treadwell, district deputy grand matron of the 49th district, is in charge of making arrangements for the inspection.
The Kiwanis Club of Cape Girardeau will hold its annual 1950s and 1960s rock and roll dance from 8 p.m. to midnight April 2 at the Arena Building. Prizes will be given for the best dressed and dance contest winners. Setups will be available and coolers are permitted. Every third Saturday at 7 p.m., the Fellowship of Christian Singles II for single adults, age 40 and over, meet for food, fun and Christian fellowship at Miner Baptist Church, 416 Route H, Sikeston, Mo. A potluck dinner, with meat and drinks provided by the church, is offered.
Area shoppers will be able to sign their names to a petition on Saturday, representing a pledge to watch nonviolent TV shows on April 5. This effort will help the Cape Girardeau Family and Community Education (FCE) in its campaign to prevent violent TV programming.
