The Cape Girardeau County Chapter of AARP 4041 will meet at 1:30 p.m. today at Grace United Methodist Church, Broadway and Caruthers Avenue. A program on the Bollinger County Mill will be presented by Jack Smoot. A drawing for a door prize will be held.
Southeast Missouri Hospital's HealthPoint Fitness Center will sponsor a four-week Boot Camp program held from 4 to 5 p.m. beginning Thursday for children 6 to 13. The program will be held at HealthPoint Fitness in the HealthPoint Plaza building at the corner of Kingshighway and Independence Street. The USSMissouri is best remembered for the signing of the peace treaty between Allied Forces and Japan on her decks, thereby ending World War II. Shipmates of the USS Missouri will remember the anniversary of raising the flag on Iwo Jimo and the beginning of Desert Storm at an upcoming reunion. The Cape Girardeau Area Safe Kids Coalition, sponsored by Southeast Missouri Hospital, will hold free car seat inspections at local Chevrolet dealerships in observance of Child Passenger Safety Week. Parents and caregivers will learn to install and adjust their child safety seats properly. The Jackson and Cape Girardeau police and fire departments will be on hand to assist with the inspections and offer information on child safety. The inspection usually takes about 30 minutes. Bring your child and the owner's manual for your vehicle and car seat. The inspections will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 14 at Coad Chevrolet, 517 S. Kingshighway, Cape Girardeau, and Feb. 17 at Brennecke Chevrolet, 700 E. Jackson Blvd., Jackson. Sparky the Fire Dog will make an appearance at the Jackson location.
