Annual open house offered at high school

Notre Dame Regional High School will begin with a welcoming assembly at 6:30 p.m. Monday for the annual grade school/junior high student open house.

Individuals interested in making Notre Dame their high school for the 2004-05 school year should come by for a tour and an evening of fun.

Sunbeam clinic taking place Saturday morning

The Southeast Missouri State University Sundancers and Cheerleaders annual Sunbeam clinic will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday in the Student Recreation Center on campus.

Open to girls and boys ages 4 to 12. Cost includes a clinic T-shirt, snack and admission to the Southeast Football game vs. Tennessee State at 1 p.m. The Sunbeams will perform during halftime. To register call Nancy at 986-6139 or e-mail ngreaser@semo.edu.

Regional library celebrates reading

Children's Book Week will be celebrated Nov. 17 to 23 at the Riverside Regional Library.

A drawing for paperback books will be held. Preschool children are encouraged to sign up every time they visit the library.

Designed to encourage parents and caregivers to read aloud to pre-readers using recent, high quality picture books as a resource, the Missouri Building Block Picture Book Award will be voted on by children at their local branch of Riverside Regional Library.

Newcomer's Club gathers Wednesdays

The club meets the first Wednesday of each month at 11:30 a.m. at Port Cape Restaurant.

The organization is open to anyone who has moved into the area within the last two years and who shares the club's common interests and goals. Visitors are welcome to attend a general meeting or several club functions before making a decision to join.

November activities include a 7 p.m. Monday, Book Club meeting at Barnes & Noble. "Empire Falls" by Richard Russo is being discussed.

11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Lunch Bunch meets at Cafe 'Azu, 1315 Broadway, Cape Girardeau (in the old Manee Thai Restaurant).

9:30 a.m. Nov. 18 coffee at Tracy's Coffee Shop, Main Street, Jackson (across from city hall).

Public library sets date for poetry group

The monthly Poetry Coffee House will meet in the Hirsch Community Room of the Cape Girardeau Public Library at 7 p.m. Nov. 17.

Herb Taylor and Art Wilhite will lead the way to sharing poetry with a comical edge. Readers and listeners welcome. The meeting is free, open to the public and accommodations for the disabled will be made upon request.

Emerson's mobile office tours Bootheel area

The Missouri 8th Congressional District mobile office makes at least one scheduled stop in all 28 counties monthly.

The office serves as a comprehensive constituent resource regarding the federal government. U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson's staff forwards her constituent concerns about particular issues or votes facing the 108th Congress, as well as initiates individual cases that people have with federal agencies.

The mobile office schedule includes the following stops:

From 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Monday, Benton courthouse; 10 to 11 a.m., Heritage House, Sikeston; noon to 1 p.m., Charleston Library.

From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 14, Advance City Hall; 2 to 3 p.m., Oran City Hall; 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Chaffee City Hall.-- From staff reports
