BACA fund-raiser planned for Saturday
The Southeast Missouri Chapter Bikers Against Child Abuse group will hold a fund-raiser, beginning at 9 p.m. Saturday, at Shakers in Biehle, Mo. Concert performances by Knotted Fear and Fliptop Box. Christmas trees offered for sale by Legion post
American Legion Post 369 of Benton, Mo., will be selling Scotch Pine, Fir, Balsam and Fraziers from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, beginning Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The lot is next to the Scott County Courthouse in Benton. The proceeds will be used to send youths to Boys State.
Kage FCE Club donates to reading project
The Kage Family and Community Education Club of Cape Girardeau County recently presented a $500 check from a Human Environmental Sciences Extension Development (HEED) grant for a Jefferson Elementary School project titled "Reading is a Grand thing." Implemented through the school library, objectives include improving reading literacy of kindergarten, first and second grades and to provide an avenue for grandparents to help and encourage their grandchildren in reading. The grant will provide tote bags with six to eight paperback books to be used on a rotation basis. When the books have been read, children will choose one book to keep.
Rotary group donates $500 to Saint Francis
The Cape West Rotary Club donated $500 to help ease the costs of ongoing educational programs for the clinical staff at Saint Francis Medical Center's Gene E. Huckstep Emergency Center/ Level III Trauma Center and Convenient Care. It is the region's only state-designated Level III Trauma Center, serving approximately 35,000 people annually. Rotary is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders.
Town and Country FCE donates to school
Town and Country FCE members donated $250 to the Parkview School for the Severely Handicapped recently. They received a grant from the Missouri Foundation for Family and Community Education and matched it with funds from their own treasury to contribute to new playground equipment at the school.
Scouts visit Cape River Heritage Museum
The Cape River Heritage Museum welcomed Girl Scout Troops 55, 62, 67 and 338 during the recent birthday celebration of that group's founder. The Girl Scouts also toured the facility to satisfying badge requirements. The annual election of board officers took place at the museum during November. The officers are Marjorie Thompson, president; Beverly Hahs, vice president; Margaret Ford, secretary; and Dr. John Holcomb, treasurer. New board member Debi Oliver was welcomed.
County genealogical society meets Tuesday
The Cape Girardeau County Genealogical Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Cape Girardeau County Archive Center at 112 E. Washington in Jackson. Parking is available across the street in the county's Administration Building parking lot. The program will be a tour of the genealogical society's library, given by Dr. Bill Eddleman and the library committee.
