History center to hold annual Riddle lecture
The Center for Regional History will be holding its third annual Veryl L. Riddle Distinguished History Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Southeast Missouri State University Ballroom. Harper Barnes, author, editor and reviewer for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, will present "David Rowland Francis: A Missouri Democrat in Revolutionary Russia." The event is free and open to the public.
First live Tiger Time TV show to be held Tuesday
The Cape Girardeau School District will host its first live Tiger Time television program from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday on cable Channel 23.
The program will offer community members an opportunity to call in and ask a five-member questions concerning any school issue, including the recent TIF proposal and possibility of raising the tax levy. Superintendent Mark Bowles, assistant superintendents Cathy Evans and Dr. Betty Chong, chief financial officer Rob Huff and school board president Dr. Bob Fox will be on the panel.
Phone lines will open at 6 p.m., an hour before the program, so callers have more opportunity to participate. Questions will be written down and read aloud by a mediator. All those interested can call 335-5854 between 6 and 8 p.m., or e-mail questions to capechannel23@yahoo.com before the show. The program will appear on Channel 23 numerous times during the next month.
River Eagle becomes a Marine Corps sponsor
River Eagle Distributing Company recently became a Marine Corps League sponsor when Gene Patterson presented $500 to Ron Acord of the Cpl. Mason O. Yarbrough Detachment of the Marine Corps League. River Eagle will receive two invitations to the Marine Corps Ball and other benefits in return for their contribution.
The local celebration of the 227th Marine Corps Birthday is being hosted by the Yarbrough Detachment at the Holiday Inn Convention Center on Saturday, Nov. 9. The detachment has decided to open this second annual event to members of the community who wish to join the celebration and make a tax-deductible contribution to the detachment. Funds raised will help provide for the detachment's Christmas toy drive in support of Toys For Tots, honor guard equipment and events and other projects supporting the community and the corps.
