Two donate banks to penny drive at school

Lacey and Austin Dowdy donated their entire piggy banks to the penny drive at Oak Ridge Elementary School. Kristina Jones, fourth-grade teacher, accepted the donation on behalf of the school.

The penny drive has raised almost $400 for the American Red Cross relief efforts in New York and Washington.

Lorenz earns top Jaycee honor

Wanda Lorenz recently was awarded a Junior Chamber International Senatorship award at the fall convention for Missouri Jaycee chapters.

The senatorship is the highest honor that can be bestowed on a Jaycee member. Lorenz served as director, vice president and president of the Cape Girardeau Jaycee chapter. She was region 8 district director in 1995-96 and 1998-99.

Private finishes Marine Corps basic training

Marine Corps Pvt. David Bill, son of Tina and Lawrence Bill of Jackson, Mo., recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island, S.C.

Bill is a 2001 graduate of Jackson High School.

Harvest Day scheduled for Saturday in Jackson

Pioneer Apple Orchards in Jackson, Mo., is holding its 34th annual Harvest Day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Activities will include wagon rides through the orchard, pumpkin picking, pumpkin decorating, antique engines and tractors, a straw maze, a jungle maze, food stands, musical entertainment and much more. Many community organizations will be involved, such as the Noon Optimists and Junior Optimist Club. There will be a king and queen contest, with all proceeds going to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Levee fund raiser to be held this week

The village of Dutchtown, Mo., will hold its fourth annual Levee Benefit Fund Raiser Friday and Saturday at Wal-Mart Supercenter in Cape Girardeau. Hot dogs, polish sausages and drinks will be sold.

Fall cleanup week coming up in October

The City of Cape Girardeau Transfer Station will be open to city residents for free dumping of residential waste only from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily from Oct. 8-13.

Items accepted include furniture, appliances, general garage and basement cleanup items. Items that will not be accepted include commercial waste, tires, automobile parts, batteries, pesticides, chemicals, motor oil, paint and hazardous waste.

There will be a separate location for disposal of limbs, brush, grass clippings and leaves. These may be taken to the compost holding area at Third Street just off LaCruz, across from Kasten's Masonry (at the old Central Packing Plant location).

All loads hauled to the transfer station and compost holding area must be covered to prevent blowing.

Hazardous waste collection day Oct. 13

The City of Cape Girardeau's household hazardous waste collection day for residential customers will be from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 13 at the 4-H shelter in Arena Park. It will be held this date only, rain or shine.

Hazardous household waste must be in a leak-proof container and delivered or dropped off at the shelter. Only Cape Girardeau residential customers may participate.
