Salvation Army serving 'Meals with Friends'

The Salvation Army, 701 Good Hope, will be serving "Meals with Friends" this week. Serving time is 4:30 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Anyone is welcome to come and enjoy a hot, nutritious meal in a cool, friendly atmosphere at no cost.

Firefighters help fight muscular dystrophy

Firefighters in Cape Girardeau are teaming up to fight muscular dystrophy through the Muscular Dystrophy Associations's Fill the Boot campaign. Firefighters are the MDA's largest national sponsor. Last year alone, firefighters across America raised more than $14 million for Jerry's Kids.

Cape Girardeau firefighters will "fill the boot" from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Wal-Mart.

Free seminar offers dog safety lessons

A free seminar on dog behavior and how to educate your child on dog safety will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Cape Girardeau Public Library. The seminar, taught by Marilyn Olson Neville of the Canine Companion Training Club and her dog Gracie, is designed to teach children about how to approach dogs, what to do if a dog approaches them and how to respect dogs.

Handouts and coloring books will be available. The seminar is sponsored by Crosspoint Veterinary Clinic.

Scavenger hunt at Trail of Tears State Park

What are two trees that identify Trail of Tears State park as an Appalachian-type style forest? Trail of Tears State Park visitors will answer this question and many others in the Holiday Scavenger Hunt to be held Friday and Saturday.

Participants will learn about the park's cultural and natural history as they scan the park for scavenger hunt answers. An assortment of prizes donated by area businesses will be awarded at the end of the scavenger hunt at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Visitor Center. For more information, call 334-1711.

Rep. Emerson receives pharmacy award

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, R-Mo., recently received the Schwarz Pharma Leadership in Pharmacy Award during the National Association of Chain Drug Store's Pharmacy and Technology Conference.

Each year, the award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated leadership by making a significant impact on the profession of pharmacy. Emerson was honored for her efforts in promoting Medicare prescription drug reform for seniors. She introduced the Medicare Pharmacy Benefit Act of 2002 earlier this year.

Schwarz Pharma contributed $5,000 to the NACDS Education Foundation in Emerson's name. She was also awarded a $5,000 scholarship in her name to the pharmacy school of her choice, St. Louis College of Pharmacy, in St. Louis.

Fruitland school reunion scheduled for Sept. 1

The Annual Fruitland School Reunion will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 1 at the North Elementary School in Fruitland, Mo. This reunion is for anyone who attended Fruitland High School or Fruitland Elementary School. For more information, call Shirley Bishop at (573) 243-5522.

Grace UM Church to hold trivia night

Grace United Methodist Church will hold Trivia Night from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sept. 7 in the Fellowship Hall.

The event will feature 10 rounds and 100 questions on general knowledge. Prizes will be awarded for first-, second- and third-place teams. A grand prize winner will be chosen from among all team participants. Various door prizes also will be awarded throughout the evening.

Hot dogs, pizza, desserts and drinks will be available at Trivia Night. There also will be baby-sitting available at the church, located at the corner of Broadway and Caruthers in Cape Girardeau.

Interested persons are encouraged to sign up in advance. The competition will involve eight-person teams. Participants can sign up as a team or individually. Those who sign up individually will be organized into teams.

The cost is $5 per person. Reservations can be made by calling 334-1321.

Proceeds will support Cape Girardeau native and missionary Brenda Seabaugh Connelly.
