Golf scramble to benefit the Humane Society
Donations and team participants for the Century 21 golf scramble to benefit the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri will be accepted up until Friday, the day of the tournament. A live radio broadcast and a question and answer session by gardener Paul Schnare will be part of the celebration at the 20th anniversary of the Cape Girardeau Farmers Market from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. today at the Plaza Galleria parking lot at 2001 Independence St. The market, which operates from May to October, carries locally grown produce and goods. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society needs 600 volunteers to help with an anticipated 3,000 cyclists competing in the National City MS 150 Bike Tour Sept. 10 and 11 in Columbia, Mo. Nonspecialized volunteers are needed to help with registration and festivities. Specialized volunteers such as doctors, nurses, LPNs and EMTs are needed at rest stops. Volunteers with large truck experience are needed as supply truck drivers. The bike tour is expected to raise $2 million for research, programs and services to more than 5,000 people living with MS in a 90-county area. MS is a chronic disease of the central nervous system. The Kage Family and Community Education Club presented a $500 grant received from the Missouri Extension Service Human Environmental Sciences Development Fund to the Southeast Missouri Hospital Foundation. The funds will provide Medic Alert bracelets or necklaces for children with diabetes. Part of the money also will be used to help purchase buy back-to-school "party boxes" that will be made in August at the hospital's Camp DAY Break, a summer camp for area children with diabetes.
Area FCE clubs have planned a two-day trip to the Parke County Covered Bridge Festival in Rockville, Ind., on Oct. 21 and 22. A three-day trip to Branson is planned for Nov. 11 to 13; that trip includes performances and a visit to the Precious Moments complex at Carthage, Mo.
