New exhibits arrive at River Heritage Museum
New exhibits at the Cape River Heritage Museum include a scale model of the flatboat Lewis and Clark used in their travels between 1803 and 1806 and a temporary exhibit highlighting French arts, crafts and architecture in Missouri.
The museum, in the old fire station on the corner of Independence and Frederick streets, is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Appointments for large groups and special tours may be made by calling 334-0405.
Oran alumni banquet scheduled for June 14
The sixth annual Oran all-school alumni banquet will begin at 6 p.m. with a meal and a dance at 7 p.m. June 14 at the Ramada Inn in Sikeston, Mo. Graduating years that end in three and eight will be honored at the reunion. Scholarship donations are also being accepted. All graduates of Oran High School are welcomed. Day of the Family declared in Cape
National FCE (Family and Community Education) Day of the Family, declared May 15, was observed by the city of Cape Girardeau. A proclamation was signed by Mayor Jay Knudtson. Club member Verna Downen, president Dortha Strack and secretary Opal Collins were also present at the signing.
Summer reading club starts next week
The summer reading club at the Riverside Regional Library kicks off with a party in Jackson City Park at 9:30 a.m. June 3. Call the Jackson library at 243-8141 for more information.
Family support group plans to meet tonight
The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, in collaboration with the Community Counseling Center, will present a family support group to provide individuals with an opportunity to share fears, insecurities, successes, approaches to problems and to reinforce good and appropriate coping skills. Family members can obtain information and support concerning mental illness on the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Community Counseling Center. The next meeting is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today. Jackson band concerts begin next Thursday
Jackson Municipal Band Concerts will be at 8 p.m. Thursdays from June 5 to Aug.14 at the Jackson City Park band shell on Route D. Admission is free.
Petzoldt family reunion scheduled for June 1
Descendants of Freidrich Florian Petzoldt and August Petzoldt are invited to join in the family reunion beginning at noon June 1 at Immanuel Lutheran Parish Hall in Altenburg, Mo.
The meal is potluck. Plan on three dishes per family: meat, vegetable and dessert. Bring utensils, plates, napkins and drinks (tea and coffee will be provided). There will be a cost for those 11 and over to cover costs of the hall and mailings. Call Gene Petzoldt at 243-5641 for more information.
