Duo Achieves Top Honors

Twirlers, Chelsey Lukefahr, left, and Maysi Dougherty, received top honors during two recent fall twirling competitions. The girls, who are members of the Southeast Area Twirlers Cape/Jackson twirling classes, were awarded first place honors in the duet division at both the Memphis and St. Louis competitions. They also returned home with 42 additional solo awards in basic strut, military strut, solo and modeling events. The twirlers are instructed by Kandi K. Barksdale-Staples. Volunteers needed at Veterans Home

Free training classes will begin March 6 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau for people interested in becoming a pastoral care visitor volunteer at the facility.

The training is a 50-hour course that provides volunteers with insight into such topics as confidentiality, the art of listening and tools for spiritual giving. Volunteers accepted into the program after interviews held Feb. 20 to 28 will also be provided a training manual.

Interested individuals can pick up an application at the Veterans Home administrative offices between 8 and 4:30 p.m. For more information, call Ken Lipps at 290-5459.

Classes in American Sign Language offered

The Learning Enrichment Center of Southeast Missouri State University will be sponsoring American Sign Language workshops for beginners on Mondays at 6 p.m. in the University Center Riverboat Room. Workshops for advanced interpreters will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evenings. The workshops, free of charge, will continue through May 14. Adults and children are welcome.

Meeting of pagans at Barnes & Noble

Donations made to Legion scholarship

At a recent meeting held at the American Legion Post 158 Jim Nelson reported contributions to the post scholarship fund: Verna Lee Nitch and Lynette Moore in memory of Emogene Schnurbusch, Harold and Betty Landgraf in memory of Ollie Lange, the Legion Auxiliary in memory of Betty James, John Crites in memory of Mary Fehr.

Ken Koehler reported that Legion barbecues raised $1,300. He also said it looks like the American Legion will hold the Junior League State Tournament in Jackson this year.

Cotton Meyer said bingo at the Veterans Home would again be on the fourth Tuesday.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the hall.

Story time scheduled at Riverside Regional

A preschool story time will be at 9:30 a.m. today at Riverside Regional Library. The theme is Valentine's Day.

Parents Without Partners events set

Parents Without Partners will take the kids shopping for Valentine gifts and then ice cream at McDonald's at 6 p.m. Thursday. Call 335-0797 for more information.

An orientation for prospective members will be at 7 p.m. at Dairy Queen (near Schnucks) Thursday. The meeting is open to the public.

Members will attend line dance lessons at Circle S Saddle from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Workshop to be held at county archive center

The workshop "Using Tax Records" will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Cape Girardeau County Archive Center, 112 E. Washington, Jackson. Registration is required for all workshops.

Breakfast to be held for friends of Scouting
