Knights of Columbus mental retardation drive

The Knights of Columbus will hold their 33rd annual mental retardation drive, held statewide, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Knights of Columbus Council members will conduct the drive for funds outside area shopping areas in exchange for Tootsie Rolls. "A Helping Hand Serving a Special Need" is the theme. Funds will benefit more than 240 Missouri organizations for the mentally retarded and the Knights of Columbus Developmental Center at Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital.

Juvenile diabetes benefit to be held at Heuer farm

A benefit for the youth diabetes fund at Southeast Missouri Hospital will be held at the farm of Don C. Heuer on Saturday. The event starts with a 1 p.m. trail ride, followed by a 3:30 p.m. fun horse show and a 6 p.m. barbecue pork dinner. Musical entertainment will be by Third Degree. The farm is at the junction of Route Y and County Road 621, five miles past Jaycee Golf Course and Pilot House. For more information, call 270-1406.

October is Neighborhood Nights Month in Cape

Designated by special proclamation during a recent council meeting, Mayor Jay Knudtson declared October as Cape Girardeau's Neighborhood Nights Month. Get-togethers can be anything including a party, a project or potluck. Neighborhoods might be a street, a few houses or an apartment building. There is no agenda or requirements. The opportunity to receive a visit from the police or fire department is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration may be done at city hall. Crump School reunion to be held on Saturday

The Crump School reunion will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem General Baptist Church in Crump. Lunch is at noon. Bring a dish.

Reimann-Gerlach family reunion to be held Sunday

AARP holds continued historical program

The Cape Girardeau County Chapter of AARP No. 4041 will meet at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church, Broadway and Caruthers Avenue. The program will be "Cape Girardeau County Historical Homes -- continued," presented by Dr. Lisa Speer. A drawing for a door prize will be held.

Self-defense training for professionals

A free self-defense training session for professionals will be offered from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Main Street Fitness Center, 410 W. Main St., Jackson. Registration is limited to 40 participants. Those attending should wear casual clothing for this interactive workshop, which is sponsored by the Children and Youth Committee of the Community Caring Council. Contra dance at Christ Episcopal Church

Second annual Jackson alumni golf tournament

The second annual Jackson alumni golf tournament will begin at 11 a.m. Oct. 14 for lunch, followed by a noon shotgun start at Kimbeland Country Club. Each four-person team must consist of members from the same graduating class of Jackson High School. Spouses of alumni are welcome to play with their spouse's class only. Mixed-class teams may be formed if the individual's class has no team or already has a full team. Each class can have multiple teams. Katrina victims

The Revival Center director Joyce Hungate will receive hurricane victims directed by FEMA to our area. Hungate has 30 beds and rooms available to house victims. The Revival Center normally has private rooms for each family, three meals a day, access to donated clothing, jobs connections, and on-site faith support for people in transition looking for healing in life.

Busch, Boren, Evans

family reunion

The Busch, Boren and Evans families recently had a reunion at Elks Lake with activities including boating, baseball and bingo. The Busch's were owners and operators of the Wagon Wheel Saloon and Restaurant in the Opera House Building during the 40's. A program on the history of the Busch family was given by Rosemarie Evans, complete with photographs. Event organizers were Jack and Rosemarie Evans, Buddy Busch and Maxine Busch Boren.

Senator Talent accepting applications for U.S. Service Academies

U.S. Senator Jim Talent (R-Mo.), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, is accepting applications for U.S. Service Academies for the 2006 school year. Generally any student who will complete high school no later than spring of 2006, is a U.S. citizen and is younger than 25 with no dependents is qualified to apply. Requirements include an application with a resume, an essay explaining why they want to enter the Academy, three letters of recommendation and a high school transcript. The website is http://talent.senate.gov or students may call 651-0964 for more information. Applications must be received by Nov. 11.
