Chaffee planning 100 years celebration in 2005
A Chaffee centennial meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Chaffee City Hall. A board of directors will be elected at that time. All businesses and organizations are urged to have a representative at the meeting. All residents interested in helping with Chaffee's Centennial Celebration in 2005 are also urged to attend.
Genealogists to discuss Civil War searches
The Cape Girardeau County Genealogical Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Riverside Regional Library in Jackson. Dr. Bill Eddleman will present the program, "Finding Your Civil War Ancestor." He will discuss the various research avenues for obtaining details regarding ancestors. Also included in his discussion will be hints on how to access official records, pension files, regimental histories and other pertinent information. The society meets monthly on the fourth Tuesday. Brucker family invites relatives to reunion
The annual Brucker reunion will be held with a basket dinner beginning at noon Sunday at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Oran. Plates, silverware and cups will be furnished. All family members are invited to attend.
'Kids Crusade' scheduled in Scott City
A "Kids Crusade" will be held from Sunday through Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. at First Assembly of God Church in Scott City. The theme is "Live Out Loud."
Al-Anon meetings on tap each Saturday
Weekly Al-Anon family group meetings are held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturdays at the Fountain House of Christ Episcopal Church, 38 N. Fountain St. The only requirement for membership is a problem of alcoholism or other addiction in a relative or friend. Al-Anon is not affiliated with any other organization. No dues or fees apply. Republican women hear Senate, House candidates
The Cape Girardeau County Republican Women's Club will begin its monthly meeting with lunch at 11:45 a.m. Friday at the Grecian Steak House. Guest speakers include state representative candidates Billy Pat Wright and Peter Myers, and Senate candidate Jason Crowell. Jackson Riverside library sets October calendar
Riverside Regional Library in Jackson has planned the following events for children ages 1 to 8:
Oct. 5 from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. and 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. will be a program titled "Chickens, Chickens!"
Oct. 19 from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. and 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. will be a program titled "Pumpkins."
Oct. 25 from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. and 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. will be a program titled "Halloween Trick or Treat @ the Library!" Participants are invited to dress up in a costume.
Programs slated for ages 9 to 14 include:
Oct. 21 at 3:30 p.m. will be a program titled "It's Alive." Spooky tales will be read, crafts will be made and food will be served.
Oct. 18 to 22 will be Teen Read Week. Participants may sign up to win a paperback book.
Tour de Cape begins Saturday in downtown
The fifth annual Tour de Cape Bicycle Ride with Mass starts at 8 and 9 a.m. Saturday at the Boardman Pavilion in downtown Cape Girardeau. The tour features routes of 15, 30, 62 and 100 miles through rural countryside surrounding Cape Girardeau. Registration fee includes maps/cue sheets and well-marked routes, themed rest stops, with food/fluids, SAG supports with mechanic, participant event bags, attendance prizes and giveaways, post ride pasta dinner, shower passes and a T-shirt designed by area artist Don Greenwood. Klaus family prepares for reunion Sunday
Descendants of Caspar and Katherine Wehmueller Klaus will hold a reunion beginning at noon with a potluck basket dinner Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Parish Hall in Friedheim. Attendees are asked to bring table service, photos and memorabilia.
Cross Church features Burden Family Oct. 9
Beginning at 1 p.m. Oct. 9, At the Cross Church features singing from the Burden Family, formerly the Charities. A potluck dinner will also be held at 11 a.m. The church is on Route N between Delta and Leopold, Mo.
Scott City Mud Run to benefit Donnie Roth
A benefit Mud Run for Donnie Roth will be held Oct. 9 at Scott City. Go east on Main Street to second railroad crossing (Rose Con Road) and turn right. Watch for signs. Library seeking residents for focus group
The Cape Girardeau Public Library is seeking suggestions on improving library services and facilities. Focus groups are planned for 7 p.m. Oct. 13 as well as 1 and 3 p.m. Oct. 14. Both users and non-users of the library are invited to participate. Those interested in attending a focus group should call Betty Martin at 334-5279.
Heritage Association sponsoring 'Holidays with the Olivers'
Presented by the Jackson Heritage Association and Oliver House Museum, "Holidays With the Olivers" will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct.16 at the Jackson Junior High School Cafeteria. Haunted Hall of Horror comes to Arena Building
To add some scare to the end of October, the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department and River Radio are sponsoring the 2004 Haunted Hall of Horror at the Arena Building. The hall will be open from 7 p.m. to midnight on Oct. 22 and 23, and from 7 to 11 p.m. on Oct. 28 and 31. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Oak Ridge carnival to promote after-school programs
The Oak Ridge After School Adventure Club will be hosting a Lights On! Afterschool Carnival from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 14. Lights On! Afterschool is a project of the Afterschool Alliance, a not-for-profit public awareness organization working to provide all children and youths with after-school programs by 2010. The carnival will take place in the elementary gym, where games and activities will be stationed. Prizes will be given away and the Middle School Pep Club will host a food stand. Members of the community will be asked to sign paper light bulbs which will be delivered to the state legislature to encourage continuing funding of after school programs.
