AARP Tax-Aide is seeking volunteers to assist in tax preparation and to become leadership coordinators. Volunteers do not have to be an AARP member or retiree. Tax counselors receive free tax training and become IRS certified by passing the IRS exam. Jackson, East Prairie, Mo., and Charleston, Mo., have an urgent need for volunteers, but additional help is needed in Cape Girardeau, Chaffee, New Madrid, Mo., Portageville, Mo., and Marble Hill, Mo. VFW donates $500 to Cape fire department

VFW Post 3838 recently donated $500 to the Cape Girardeau fire department for identification shirts to recognize firefighters conducting free door-to-door installation of smoke alarms this fall. Grants were obtained for the smoke detectors and batteries.

Amelunke annual reunion features carry-in meal

Vietnam vets to hold fall poker run Oct. 9

The Vietnam vets M.C. chapter F will hold a fall poker run Oct. 9. Sign-ups are at 11 a.m. at Minor's Harley-Davidson, 2100 East Outer Road North, Scott City. The event will be held rain or shine. All motorcycles, cars and trucks are welcome. For more information, call Harvey at (573) 545-4591. A percentage of the proceeds will benefit the Kenny Rogers Children's Center and the Missouri Veterans Home.

Finance workshop for women offered Oct. 13

Leave a Legacy of the Heartland and the Southeast Council on Philanthropy are offering a program on personal finance education beginning at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 13 at Dempster Hall, Southeast Missouri State University. A luncheon following the workshops will begin at 11:45 a.m. Payment can be made at the door, but reservations are required by Oct. 11. Second annual Jackson alumni golf tournament

The Second annual Jackson alumni golf tournament will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 14 for lunch followed by a noon shotgun start at Kimbeland Country Club. Each four-person team must consist of members from the same graduating class of Jackson High School. Spouses of alumni are welcome to play with their spouse's class only. Mixed class teams may be formed if the individual's class has no team or already has a full team. Each class can have multiple teams. All proceeds will be donated to the Jackson R-2 School District Foundation. For more information, call Kelly Waller at 243-8000.

Jackson offers housing to Katrina victims

The Revival Center director Joyce Hungate will receive hurricane victims directed by FEMA to this area. Hungate has 30 beds and rooms available to house victims. The Revival Center normally has private rooms for each family, three meals a day, access to donated clothing, jobs connections and on-site faith support for people in transition looking for healing in life.

Busch, Boren, Evans family reunion held recently

The Busch, Boren and Evans families recently had a reunion at Elks Lake with activities including boating, baseball and bingo. The Busches were owners and operators of the Wagon Wheel Saloon and Restaurant in the Opera House Building during the 1940s. A program on the history of the Busch family was given by Rosemarie Evans, complete with photographs. Event organizers were Jack and Rosemarie Evans, Buddy Busch and Maxine Busch Boren.

Talent accepting applications for U.S. Service Academies

U.S. Senator Jim Talent (R-Mo.), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, is accepting applications for U.S. Service Academies for the 2006 school year. Generally any student who will complete high school no later than spring of 2006, is a U.S. citizen and is younger than 25 with no dependents is qualified to apply. Requirements include an application with a resume, an essay explaining why they want to enter the academy, three letters of recommendation and a high school transcript. The Web site is talent.senate.gov or students may call 651-0964 for more information. Applications must be received by Nov. 11.
