Trail of Tears programs scheduled for September
Trail of Tears State Park has the following events planned for September: an Owl Prowl at 8 p.m. on Friday; Family Feud at 10 a.m. on Saturday; a night hike at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday; Dutch oven cooking at 2 p.m. on Sunday (meet at special use area); and a folk music concert at 7 p.m. on Sept. 18 at the amphitheater. Call the park at 334-1711 if you're interested in attending a program. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult for all programs.
Deadline near for saving on Heartland Heroes
"Heartland Heroes: A Tribute to Veterans of WWI and WWII", a 280-page book of photos and memorabilia from World War I and World War II, is due to arrive in late November. Veterans and their families from Cape Girardeau, Scott, Bollinger and Perry counties contributed to this work. Books ordered before Friday can be purchased at a discount. Order forms are available at the Southeast Missourian, The Banner Press or the Scott County Signal or by calling 335-6611.
Canned food can get you in the club this weekend
The Salvation Army and The Mix teen dance club are co-sponsoring a canned food drive at the club this weekend. All teens who bring canned food to the club, 823 S. Kingshighway, will get a discount on their admission to the club. The discount will be determined based on the amount of cans contributed. All collected items will be donated to the Salvation Army. Music, crafts featured at Arrowhead Campground
Beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday and continuing through Saturday evening, Arrowhead Campground will provide a variety of music and crafts. Dan Wiethop, Cris Bell, Alisha Walther and the Rice Sisters will be featured on Friday. The Rice Sisters, Carolyn Long, Coyotes and Catch 22 (formerly 2 shy 2) will be featured on Saturday. Humane Society holds mobile pet adoption
The Humane Society of Southeast Missouri will be conducting a mobile adoption from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Petco in Cape Girardeau. Information and registration forms for the 2005 Pet Photo Calendar Contest will be available. For further information, call the shelter at 334-5837.
Fruitland school alums reuniting Saturday
The annual Fruitland School reunion is slated for 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Delmonico's Restaurant. The group will be seated in a private room together. Meal will be Dutch treat. Bring pictures and memorabilia. Call Jerry McDowell at 243-8324 for more information.
Golf fund raiser benefits PAWS animal shelter
To support PAWS, a no-kill shelter for homeless and unwanted companion animals in Anna, Ill., a fund raiser has been announced by Midland Hills Golf Club of Makanda, Ill. Breakfast will be served at 7:30 a.m. Sept. 11, followed by a 16-hole scramble at the golf course. PAWS has found homes for approximately 500 animals annually since the facility has been in operation. For more information, call Doug at (618) 529-3698.
Bark in the Park on tap Sept. 25
The Humane Society of Southeast Missouri's 10th annual Bark in the Park will be held Sept. 25 at Capaha Park shelter No. 1. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Proceeds benefit animals in the care of the Humane Society.
