Silent auction will raise hurricane relief funds

Stamps and Scrapbooks at 412 East Main St. in Jackson will hold an ongoing silent auction of miscellaneous items including scrapbooking supplies until Friday. From 6 to 11 p.m. Friday the class fee for crop night will be donated to the relief effort for those participating and auction items bid upon will be sold. AARP meets at church for fellowship and dancing

The Cape Girardeau County AARP 4041 meets at noon today at Grace United Methodist Church, Broadway and Caruthers Avenue for fellowship with lunch. Please bring a salad or dessert. Fried chicken will be provided. Line dancing with Beth Mueller instructor is on the agenda.

Notre Dame holds annual activity week

Notre Dame Regional High School is holding its annual activity week beginning Friday and lasting through Sept. 24. The week involves students, staff, parents and the community in raising funds to reduce the school's operating budget. Car washes, raffles, magazine subscriptions, candy and fruit sales and public dinners will be held. A fried chicken dinner held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 18 will benefit the junior class. Barbeque sandwiches will be sold from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 19 to benefit the senior class. The sophomore class will hold a chicken and dumplings dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 22. A chili dinner held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 23 will benefit the freshman class. Children under 4 eat free. For house or yardwork projects for students to fulfill, call the school at 335-6772. Donations will go to their specific class. The class with the largest profit per capita will crown a king and queen candidate at the Activity Week Dance.

Funds, foster homes will help hurricane pet victims

The Humane Society of Southeast Missouri is in need of foster homes, pet carriers and funds for pet victims of Katrina coming to the area. Funds will be used to vaccinate and help feed the pets who have survived Katrina. For more information, call 334-5837.

Deadline approaches for Carnival Queen Contest

The 2005 Cotton Carnival Queen Contest will be held Oct. 1 at the Cotton Carnival stage located on rodeo grounds. The contest is open to any unmarried teenager attending high school (except Sikeston Public Schools) who resides in Southeast Missouri. Entry deadline is Sept. 23. All queen contestants must ride on floats or in a convertible supplied by the contestant or indicate to the parade marshal that other arrangements will be followed. The parade lineup is at 9 a.m.; contest begins approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the parade. The event is held in conjunction with the 61st annual American Legion Cotton Carnival. Central High class holds 50-year golden reunion

Central High School's class of 1955 will kick off its 50-year reunion celebration at 2 p.m. Sept. 23 with registration at Port Cape Restaurant followed by a 6 p.m. dinner and a program with music from 7 p.m. to midnight. Soft drinks, coffee, tea and lemonade will be provided. There will be a cash bar. Port Cape will be the meeting and greeting place from noon to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 24, followed by a 4 p.m. cocktail hour at the Cape Girardeau Country Club with a 6 p.m. banquet, program and music continuing until midnight. Trail of Tears Association meets in Vienna

VIENNA, Ill. -- The public is invited to attend the Illinois Chapter of the National Trail of Tears Association fall meeting at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the community room of the Vienna Carnegie Library (lower level) on the south side of Vienna's town square. Heather Carey, assistant forest archeologist with the Shawnee National Forest, will speak about the Trail of Tears as it passed through Southern Illinois and what the National Forest Service is doing to preserve sites and educate the public about the Trail of Tears. Following the presentation will be time for questions and answers and a short business meeting with an update from chapter president Dr. Andrew West. Salvation Army asks for community assistance

The Salvation Army needs nonperishable food items, hygiene products, personal care items, new socks and under clothes, towels and linens, school supplies and monetary donations to help victims of Katrina. Items can be dropped off at 701 Good Hope St., Cape Girardeau, or call 335-7000 for more information.

Rep. Emerson receives Friend of Transit Award

Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson, Missouri 8th District, recently was awarded the Friend of Transit Award at the Federal Building in Cape Girardeau by Missouri Public Transit Association president Bill Osborne, who is the director of Southeast Missouri Transportation Services; board member Jeff Brune, director Cape County Transit Authority; and Dodi Elledge with Southeast Missouri Workforce Investment Board. She was honored for her work helping people find travel alternatives to a personal vehicle. Emerson awarded Corey Sinn of Jr. Sinn Automotive for donations to improve travel choices in Southeast Missouri. More than 50 businesses and organizations participate in coordinated donations.

Fruitland School reunion held recently in Jackson

The annual reunion of former Fruitland School students was held recently at Delmonico's Restaurant in Jackson. In attendance were 10 who graduated from Fruitland High School and those who went to grade school there from 1940 to 1978. The school was then torn down and North Elementary was built on the same site. The group donated to the Charleston Baptist Association Camp in Benton to help those made homeless by hurricane Katrina. To increase attendance, the date of next year's gathering will be the last Saturday in September instead of the Saturday before Labor Day. The first reunion was held in 1979 with 150 former students attending.
