Community dance features fiddle tunes

Cape Friends of Traditional Music and Dance will hold a community dance from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church, 101 N. Fountain St., Cape Girardeau. The entry fee, reduced for children 8 to 16, covers the cost of a caller who teaches and prompts dances and live old-time fiddle tunes. No partner, costume or experience necessary. Nominate someone as Woman of Achievement

The Zonta Club of Cape Girardeau Area is accepting nominations for their 2004 Woman of Achievement Award. The award will be given at the Women of Achievement Luncheon on Sept. 30 at the Osage Community Centre in Cape Girardeau. The nominees are divided into two categories: professional and volunteer. To nominate someone leave her name and address on voice mail at 339-5500 or e-mail maria@jcstel.com. A panel of judges selects the recipients but all nominees are recognized at the luncheon. The nomination deadline is Wednesday. Tickets for the luncheon may be purchased by calling 339-5500.

Christ Episcopal plans trivia night Sept. 10

Christ Episcopal Church will hold its first trivia contest Sept. 18 at 101 N. Fountain St., Cape Girardeau. Deadline for entries is Sept. 10. Teams will consist of eight participants who collaborate on answers to questions in 10 categories including sports, the Bible, churches, America, Cape Girardeau, landmarks, art, music, books and academy awards. Individual entries will be assigned to a team. Each category will have 10 questions. Door prizes will also be awarded. The team with the highest cumulative score will receive a cash prize, as will the second and third place teams. For more information call Lisa or Bob at 335-2997.

Grants, loans available for housing assistance

The Missouri Housing Development Commission has announced the availability of $6 million for agencies and organizations providing housing services for low-income individuals and families in Missouri in 2005 through the Missouri Housing Trust Fund. The process of granting or loaning funds includes comparing applications providing information on demonstrated need, leveraged financing, targeted population served, economic feasibility, experience of the providers, local support for the program and other revenue sources being used. The commission will accept applications until 5 p.m. Oct. 19 at 3435 Broadway, Kansas City, Mo., 64111.

The Missouri Housing Development Commission has announced the availability of funding in 2005 for rehabilitation or construction of rental housing units for low- and moderate-income families in Missouri. Supply closet at caring council needs a refill

The community case manager with the Community Caring Council and First Call for Help asks community organizations to help fill the agency's dwindling supply closet. An overload of calls over the past six months has left the closet wanting for replacement items. These include everything from cleaning supplies to baby needs. End of life planning meeting Sept. 21

The Coalition for End of Life Care in Southeast Missouri will begin offering speakers for area clubs, church groups and health-care professionals interested in knowing more about current and future health-care choices for those facing end-of-life decisions. The coalition is a local organization registered nationally. Membership is open to all interested individuals. The next meeting is 7 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Visiting Nurse Association office, 145 S. Area veterans to meet at Ryan's Steak House

A group of veterans from the Cape Girardeau area held their first meeting recently at Ryan's Steak House. Eighteen veterans and their wives from Ste. Genevieve, Mo., Scott City, Dexter, Mo., Oran, Mo., and Jackson were in attendance. The group plans include a monthly meeting at 11:30 a.m. on the third Tuesday at Ryan's Steak House, 130 Vantage Drive, Cape Girardeau. All veterans and their wives are invited to attend the upcoming Sept. 21 meeting.
