GPS training to be held at Nature Center

Find out about hidden treasures called "geocaches" that can keep you from getting lost. Learn the basics of using global positioning with the help of Dru Reeves, who has extensive training in land navigation from the U.S. Army Reserves, from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Campus. This event is for ages 12 to adult. Registration is required. Call 290-5218.

St. Joseph to hold parish picnic at Apple Creek

The St. Joseph parish picnic at Apple Creek will begin at 1 p.m. Sept. 2. Activities will include games, a country store, a fancy stand, raffles for prizes and bingo for quilts and cash. Kettle-cooked beef and fried chicken will be served from 2 to 7 p.m., rain or shine. Children under 6 eat free. Hamburgers, fish, grilled cheese, ice cream, soda and beer will also be available. The Rev. Anthony Dattilo will preside at a 4 p.m. Mass. There will be free dancing with Doug and Mitch until 11 p.m. Take Interstate 55 to Biehle exit, south on Route B for a mile, turn left on Route F. Go five miles to church on left.

Labor day pageant to be held at Advance Sept. 4

Wild horse and burro adoption at Ewing

The Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management -- Eastern States (BLM-ES) will hold a wild horse and burro adoption from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 9 at the Wild Horse and Burro Holding Facility in Ewing, Ill., located 30 minutes from Mount Vernon, Ill., east of Interstate 57, exit 77. Animals can be viewed by the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 8. Remaining animals will be available for adoption from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 10. For more information, call (800) 370-3936.

NARFE to meet Sept. 12 at Perryville Ponderosa

The National Association of Retired and current Federal Employees (NARFE) Chapter 1237 will meet at noon Sept. 12 at Ponderosa Steakhouse in Perryville, Mo. Old McKendree Chapel to hold activities for public

Worship and activities to celebrate Centenary Methodist Church's centennial will be held at 10 a.m. Sept. 17 at Old McKendree Chapel, a national Methodist shrine. Docent tours, camp meeting songs, noon box-lunch picnic, musical groups in period costumes, speakers on "Our Methodist Heritage" and "A Historical Re-enactment" are the planned activities.

Cape Shrine Club to hold poker run Sept. 24

The 10th annual Cape Shrine Club poker run will be Sept. 24. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. at corner of Main Street and Broadway in downtown Cape Girardeau. All motorcycle riders are welcome. McClure's first fall picnic and sign dedication

A fall picnic and sign dedication will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 30 at McClure, Ill., grade school. The sign dedication will at 10 a.m. Activities will include a pumpkin decorating contest, goose- and crow-calling contest, games, dunking booth, tug-ofwar, bake sale, gospel singing, barbeque, raffles, 50/50 drawing, fire department expo.
