Learn to recognize and report child abuse

A course on recognizing child abuse will be held from 8 to 10 a.m., 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 1 to 3 p.m., 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Friday, and Sept. 1 at Saint Francis Medical Center Classroom A. The course is for medical personnel, law enforcement, foster parents, day-care providers, counselors, school administrators, teachers, church personnel and all mandated reporters. Grandparent support group meets Wednesday

The grandparent support group is for any relative raising children other than their own. The group will meet at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Cape Girardeau County Extension Center, 684 W. Jackson Trail, Jackson. Opportunities for meeting individuals in the same situation and receiving practical information are made available at the support group. Call 243-3581 to attend the meeting.

Jackson Senior Center will hold grand opening

The Jackson Senior Center board invites the public to its grand opening beginning with a ribbon cutting at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at 2690 Travelers Way, Jackson.

St. Joseph dinner auction tickets go on sale

Tickets for the 14th annual St. Joseph Dinner Auction go on sale on a first-come, first-served basis at 8 p.m. Saturday in the gym. Guests must be 21 years old to attend. Raffle tickets for a T.V., laptop and dinner certificate go on sale after the 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday Masses. Winners need not be present when the raffle is drawn at the dinner auction held Oct. 8 at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Auction donation deadline is Sept. 9. Miss Heartland Pageants entry deadline nears

Sponsored by the Dexter High School Vocal Music Department, the Miss Heartland Pageants are open to females throughout the region for ages birth to 19 years old. The event begins at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 4 at the DHS Auditorium on Grant Street in Dexter. Local author to interview on TV and sign books

Dr. Max Heeb, author of "Max The Knife," an online book available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble, (with hard copies available upon request) will be interviewed on WQWQ at 6 p.m. Sept. 23, and at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 24. A KFVS12 interview will air at 5:30 a.m. Sept. 25. A booksigning will be held at the Book Bug Sept. 10 in Sikeston, Mo. Heeb, a general surgeon from Sikeston who grew up in Chaffee, recounts unusual cases, circumstances and doctor-patient relationships.

Nussbaums set planning committee members for 2006

The annual Nussbaum family reunion held recently included a basket dinner at Immanual Lutheran Church Parish Hall in Tilsit with 94 in attendance. Prizes were awarded to Esther Nussbaum, oldest in attendance; Mason Lee, youngest in attendance; Hilbert and Gladys Kraemer, married the longest; Scott and Patti Whittington, most recently married; and traveling the farthest, the Randy Medlock family. Winners of the door prize were Bethany Mungle and Devon Mungle. Planning committee members for the July 30, 2006 reunion are Marie Hoffmeister, Pattie Whittington of Jackson, Shirley Medlock of Cape Girardeau and Becky Jarvis of Makanda, Ill.

Oak Ridge High School alumni seek classmate updates

Postcards for the Oak Ridge school alumni banquet held Nov. 5 in the Oak Ridge school cafeteria will be mailed in September.
