The Cape Girardeau Post M of the Travelers Protective Association will hold a family picnic Saturday, Aug. 20 at Cape County Park shelter 8. Pork steak and side dishes are on the menu. Games are planned. Girl Scout Troop 321, sponsored by Post M, helped with July's picnic and will assist with upcoming safety projects.

Democrats hold party at County Park

Democrats from the Southeast Missouri region will meet at Cape Girardeau County Park north from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20. Attendees will have the chance to meet other area Democrats and offer their suggestions to progress the party. Guest speakers Bekki Cook and Patt Sharp will outline party goals and motivate local Democrats to get out the vote. Local pastor Dr. A.G. Green from Rhema Word Intl. Ministries will also speak about community involvement and unification. Hamburgers, hot dogs and fried fish will be served. Please bring lawn chairs and a dish to share. Families encouraged to attend, children eat free.

Mungle family reunion to be held Sunday

Individuals and families attending the Mungle family reunion should bring a basket dinner to the event held at noon Sunday, Aug. 21 at Jackson Park pavillion no. 6, south of the old swimming pool.

Civil War Roundtable meets Sunday afternoon

The Cape Civil War Roundtable will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21 at Hanover Lutheran Church, 2949 Perryville Rd., Cape Girardeau. Club member Mike Hahn will present "Southeast Missouri During the First Year of the War." The annual fall trip to Bloomfield's Stars and Stripes Museum will be Saturday, Sept. 10. Plan to meet at the Hanover Lutheran Church parking lot at 8 a.m. or meet the group at the museum between 8:30 and 9 a.m.

Meals with friends served at Salvation Army

Meals with friends will be served from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday, Aug. 22 to 26 at the Salvation Army, 701 Good Hope St., Cape Girardeau. Individuals are welcome to enjoy a hot, nutritious meal at no cost. Daily dessert is cake or pie. Monday's menu includes chicken nuggets, French fries, peaches, bread and butter; Tuesday, Beef stroganoff, mashed potatoes, peas, jello with fruit, rolls and butter; Wednesday, ham sandwiches, chips, mixed fruit; Thursday, turkey and rice casserole, cranberry sauce, mixed vegetables, rolls and butter; Friday, nachos, refried beans, pears.

Cape Girardeau Public Library shows foreign film

Le Grand Voyage will be shown at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23 in the Hirsch Community Room. Set in France and Morocco, the film is in Arabic and French with English subtitles. No charge, intended for a mature audience, snacks provided.

Grandparent support group meets Wednesday

At 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24 the grandparent support group, for any relative raising children other than their own, will meet at the Cape Girardeau County Extension Center, 684 W. Jackson Trail, Jackson. Opportunities for meeting individuals in the same situation and receiving practical information are made available at the support group. Call 243-3581 to attend the meeting.

Jackson Senior Center holds grand opening

The Jackson Senior Center Board invites the public to its grand opening beginning with a ribbon cutting at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 25 at 2690 Travelers Way, Jackson.

St. Joseph Dinner Auction tickets go on sale

Tickets for the 14th annual St. Joseph Dinner Auction go on sale on a first-come, first-serve basis at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27 in the gym. Guests must be 21 years old to attend. Raffle tickets for a T.V., laptop and dinner certificate go on sale after the 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 28 masses. Winners need not be present when the raffle is drawn at the dinner auction held Saturday, Oct. 8 at the KC Hall. Auction donation deadline is Sept. 9. Individuals with questions about donations from businesses or the VIP dinner table may call Donna Boyd at 264-4438. Individual donors may call Mary Cobb at 264-4519.

Nussbaum reunion sets committee for '06

The annual Nussbaum family reunion held recently included a basket dinner at Immanual Lutheran Church Parish Hall in Tilsit with 94 in attendance. Prizes were awarded to Esther Nussbaum oldest in attendance; Mason Lee youngest in attendance; Hilbert and Gladys Kraemer married the longest; most recently married Scott and Patti Whittington; traveling the farthest, the Randy Medlock family. Winners of the door prize were Bethany Mungle and Devon Mungle. Planning committee members for the July 30, 2006 reunion are Marie Hoffmeister, Pattie Whittington of Jackson; Shirley Medlock of Cape Girardeau; Becky Jarvis of McKonda, Ill.
