T.P.A. to host family picnic Saturday

Cape Girardeau Post M of the Travelers Protective Association (T.P.A.) will hold a family picnic at 6 p.m. Saturday at shelter 8 in Cape County Park.

Kettle beef will be served. Beverages and table service will be provided. Members are invited to bring their families prospective members.

Depressive and manic depressive group to meet

The Depressive and Manic Depressive Association of Southeast Missouri will meet tonight at St. Francis Medical Center in Conference Room B.

Georgette Johnson, Psy.D., will be guest speaker.

Volunteerism conference set for October

The annual Southern Illinois Volunteerism Conference will be held Oct. 9 at John A. Logan Community College near Carterville, Ill. The one-day conference is open to volunteers and anyone who work with volunteers.

Cape patrolman retires after 30 years of service

Patrolman Don Hellwege retired from the Cape Girardeau Police Department on Friday after more than 30 years of service to the Cape Girardeau community.

Hellwege will be presented with a plaque and proclamation recognizing his service at the Cape Girardeau City Council meeting tonight.

Hellwege started work with the Cape Girardeau Police Department on May 10, 1971, and attained the rank of corporal before resigning in November 1976. He then returned one year later.

Hellwege earned an associate degree in law enforcement from Southeast Missouri State University in 1977. He is a certified police traffic radar instructor and spent more than 20 years of his career in the traffic division of the police department. It is estimated that he investigated well over 5,000 vehicle accidents during his career.

Estates win VFW's Loyalty Day contest

Chateau Girardeau Estates was the winner of a Loyalty Day contest sponsored by the VFW Post 3838. The contest took place on May 1, and participating in the contest were the residents of Chateau Girardeau. The goal was for 100 percent of the residents to fly the American flag in honor of Loyalty Day.

As winners of the event, an American flag and plaque were presented to the residents of Chateau Girardeau on July 3 during a ceremony in which Commander Fletcher Chasteen led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Debbie Griffin, president of the VFW Auxiliary 3838, read a collection of patriotic verses.

Masonic Lodge plans dinner and meeting

The Millsersville Masonic Lodge Westview 103 will host a dinner at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday. The dinner will be followed by a meeting, and all Masons are invited. For more information, call Billy Keele at (573) 866-3282.

Sikeston chamber will sponsor baby contest

The Little Mr. and Miss Baby Back contest will be held Saturday, Aug. 10, at 10 a.m. at Malone Park in downtown Sikeston. The entry fee is $10. The contest is open to all boys and girls ages 1-6. There are three age groups with a boy's and a girl's category in each age group. The age groups are 1-2 years old, 3-4 years old and 5-6 years old.

This is a fun, but not sanctioned event. Attire is to be casual, rodeo or barbecue attire -- no pageant dresses or tuxedos. Contestants are judged on stage presence, personality and overall appearance. Prizes will be awarded in each category. Applications and entry fees should be submitted to SACC, #1 Industrial Drive, Sikeston, Mo. 63801 by Aug. 1. For more information, call (573) 471-2498.
