Genealogical group meets Tuesday for research
The Cape Girardeau County Genealogical Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Riverside Regional Library in Jackson. This informal meeting will be a time of research with no business meeting or formal program presented. Visitors may bring their questions and work with more experienced genealogists at the meeting. The society meets monthly on the fourth Tuesday. Nonmembers are welcome at all meetings. For more information, call Bill Eddleman at 335-1507.
The 49th district of the order of the Eastern Star will hold a reception honoring worthy grand matron Retha Felkner, worthy grand patron Creed Marriott, the 2005 grand family and district deputy grand matron Joyce Treadwell at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Masonic Temple in Cape Girardeau. All Eastern Star members are welcome.
Nadiene Walsh represented the Heartland Care and Rehabilitation Center at the Missouri Healthcare Association District 5 Nursing Home Pageant on Friday at Ste. Genevieve's Chaumette Winery. Winners at the Ste. Genevieve pageant will go on to the Lake of the Ozarks this summer, where the state nursing home queen will be decided.

* A primitive weapons demonstration with Roger McMurray will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 9.
* Children's crafts with Linda Royce will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 16.

* Book signing by Susan Wittig Albert, author of "The Tale of Holly How: The Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter," at 7 p.m. July 11. Albert will speak about her work, answer questions and sign copies of her book, available for purchase courtesy of the Friends of the Cape Girardeau Public Library Foundation. * "Carol's Journey", a first-run independent Spanish film, will be shown at 7 p.m. July 26 in the Hirsch Community Room, free of charge. Snacks will be served. The film runs approximately 100 minutes and contains mature themes. Call adult services for more information.
* Knitting Club for all ages and skill levels meets at 7 p.m. July 21. Bring needles and yarn.
* The conclusion of the adult summer reading program will present "A Knight to Remember" at 7 p.m. July 30 in the Hirsch Community Room. No registration is necessary to learn about knighthood from a real modern day knight, Karl M. Kindt III.
A family buffet-style dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. at XXXXXXXX [WHERE IS THIS IN ORAN?]. The menu includes all-you-can-eat roast beef, fried chicken, dressing, ham and all the trimmings, drinks and dessert. Children under 6 eat free. Attractions include western wagon rides from noon to 6 p.m.; at 1 p.m. Semo Scaled Auto Race and a horseshoe tournament; 3 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m., musical entertainment; 4 p.m. turtle race; 6 p.m. kiddie tractor pull; 8 to 11:30 p.m. dancing; and fireworks at 10 p.m. There will be bingo and games for all ages. The event is sponsored by Knights of Columbus Council No. 4311.

The Cape Friends of Traditional Music and Dance will hold a community dance from 7 to 9:30 p.m. July 9 at Christ Episcopal Church, 101 N. Fountain St. in Cape Girardeau. Dances will feature a caller who teaches and prompts the dances, and old-time fiddle tunes. No partner, costume or experience necessary.
