Humane Society's hours changing on Sundays
As of June 13, the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri's permanent hours of operation changed to noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The Humane Society will continue to be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Visit www.semopets.org for more information.
Cape Genealogical Society meeting Tuesday
The Cape Girardeau County Genealogical Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Jackson Riverside Regional Library. This informal meeting will be a time of research without a business meeting or formal program. Visitors are invited to bring questions and work with more experienced genealogists at the meeting.The society meets monthly on the fourth Tuesday; nonmembers are welcome at all meetings. Cape Municipal Band plans Wednesday show
The Cape Girardeau Municipal Band concert will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Capaha Park Band Shell. Ed Cowan will be the guest conductor; Mayor Jay Knudtson will be the celebrity guest director. Special entertainment includes Saxy Jazz with Pat Schwent. "The Marriage of Figaro", selections from "Chicago" and an Aaron Copeland tribute are included in the program.
Local fiddler is guest at Jackson Band Concert
Steve Shaffner, one of the area's premier country fiddlers, will be the special guest at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Jackson Municipal Band concert. Shaffner graduated from Augusta College in Augusta, Georgia; worked as a string instructor at Davidson Fine Arts Institute and is currently a string instructor at Cape Girardeau Public Schools. His performance will include a variety of selections from classical to country. The Jackson Band concert will feature retired Jackson band director Pat Schwent, marches and selections from musicals.
Charity bike show and games on Saturday
Sign up begins at 10 a.m, games at noon and people's choice awards at 3 p.m. Saturday during the St. Jude's Bike Show. There is an entry fee; all proceeds benefit St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. Camps on tap at Jackson Main Street FitnessFrom 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 28, children 6 to 13 can experience a 1970s day camp. Games of the 1970s and typical day camp activities will be enjoyed. From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 30 an all sports training camp will be held. Participants learn sport-specific training methods and appropriate stretches; as well as the basics and skills of softball, flag football, soccer and basketball. Any individual is welcome to come and enjoy a hot, nutritious meal in a cool, friendly atmosphere at no cost from 4:30 to 6 p.m. today through Friday, at The Salvation Army, 701 Good Hope St., Cape Girardeau. The menu for today is hot dogs on bun with or without chili, french fries, peaches, cake or pie; Tuesday: ribs, coleslaw, baked beans, rolls and butter, cake or pie; Wednesday: barbecue pork, mixed vegetables, pears, bread and butter, cake or pie; Thursday: spaghetti, green beans, jello with fruit, bread and butter, cake or pie; and Friday: tuna salad sandwiches, potato chips, apples, cake or pie.
