Eakins descendants gather for reunion

Descendants of Scott and Carolina Achtermann Eakins will gather from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Capaha Park shelter No. 1 in Cape Girardeau for their annual family reunion. The reunion is typically held on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. A potluck meal will be served at noon. Bring a covered dish, eating utensils and lawn chairs. Memorial service to be held at Crump

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Proffer Cemetery in Crump. Everyone is invited.

Plainview Cemetery holds annual meeting

MARBLE HILL, Mo. — The Plainview Cemetery Association in Marble Hill will hold its annual meeting at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in Fellowship Hall. The cemetery is off Highway 51 in Bollinger County. China John's dinner to benefit quake victims

To combat the devastating earthquake in China, local Asian community members and China John's Restaurant will hold an all-you-can-eat dinner buffet to help the thousands of Chinese people without clean drinking water or food. The charity dinner party will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at China John's Restaurant, 1815 E. Jackson Blvd. in Jackson near the BP gas station. All the proceeds will benefit earthquake victims. Salvation Army serves Meals with Friends

The Salvation Army will serve Meals with Friends from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday at 701 Good Hope St. in Cape Girardeau at no cost. Current supplies running low are large cans of fruit, egg noodles, spaghetti, hot dogs, carry-out trays, bowls, dessert plates, plastic ware and napkins. These can be dropped off at the Good Hope Street address. The daily dessert is cake or pie. Monday's menu is spaghetti, green beans, rolls, fruit; Tuesday is sloppy joes, chips, fruit; Wednesday is turkey and noodles, green beans, rolls, fruit; Thursday is shepherd's pie, fruit, rolls; Friday is turkey salad sandwiches, chips, fruit.

Buchheit Inc. recently donated $250 to the Girl Scouts of the Otahki Council. The financial support will go toward the progressive horse program the council supports and help girls understand how to care for horses, develop proper riding skills and increase their self-confidence as they learn a new skill.

Join Hands Day project held at Sunshine Villa

Cape Girardeau members of the United Commercial Travelers Council 534 participated in an intergenerational project with residents of Sunshine Villa in Scott City. An elevated flower bed was cleared of debris, and students from the horticulture department at Southeast Missouri State filled it with locally grown plants. Profits from the UCT booth at the SEMO District Fair were used in this year's project for Join Hands Day. Care and maintenance will be monitored by UCT members Roy Rhodes and Bambi Chapman.

Child Safety Day at Kohl's canceled

Child Safety Day, scheduled for May 31 at Kohl's in Cape Girardeau, has been canceled. The sponsor, State Farm, canceled this year's event, which originally was to have been held in conjunction with the Safe Kids organization. Safe Kids will continue its work to promote child safety in the region.

Cape library reading club begins soon

The Cape Girardeau Public Library's adult reading club begins at 7 p.m. June 2 with the kick-off program "Attracting Butterflies to Your Garden" presented by Donna Aufdenberg of the Missouri Extension Center of Bollinger County. There will be weekly activities, prizes and special programs. The theme of the Adult Summer Reading Club is "Don't Bug Me, I'm Reading." An information packet should be picked up when you register. The club concludes July 31.

McGraw-Hanners family reunion set for June 7

PATTON, Mo. — An daylong reunion of the McGraw-Hanners family will be held June 7 at the Patton Saddle Club on Highway 51, one mile north of the junction of highways 51 and 72. Annual Oran Car Show to be held June 7
