Pennies From Heaven auction benefits hospital

Southeast Missouri Hospital Foundation will host its annual "Pennies From Heaven" benefit auction at 5 p.m. Friday at the A.C. Brase Arena Building. Silent auctions will begin at 5:30 p.m. The oral auction, conducted by the Chug Crites Auction Service, begins at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free. Refreshments may be purchased throughout the evening. Prior to the auction a basket contest will be held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the hospital's Harrison Room. For more information, call 334-9254.

Memorial Day picnic, reunion planned

The descendants of Scott and Carolina Achtermann Eakins will hold their annual Eakins Family Memorial Day covered-dish picnic May 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lunch will be served at noon at Capaha Park shelter No.1. The children of Scott and Carolina Eakins are Effie Eakins Kinder, Minnie Eakins, Rosie Eakins, Robert Eakins, Ederett Scott Eakins, Louis Eakins, Dydema May Eakins Lape, Mary Annie Eakins Huckstep and Maude Mabel Eakins Deimund. Leave A Legacy presents seminar on family care

Leave A Legacy of the Heartland has brought together local professionals for free seminars concerning issues on family caregiving available at two sessions Thursday at Westfield Shoppingtown West Park in Cape Girar-deau. The seminars, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m., will be located near Kay Jewelers and Lane Bryant. Topics include financial considerations, health care, qualifications for Medicaid, allocation and protection of assets, benefits of gifts to individuals and charities, family care-giving skills and information on local resources related to aging. Senior Center sponsoring Miles For Meals Walk

The Jackson Senior Center will hold its annual Miles for Meals Walk beginning at 9:30 a.m. Friday. Proceeds from the event benefit the center's nutrition center and day-to-day operating costs. This nutrition program provides a hot meal for seniors at the center and by delivery to residences every weekday. For information on donating to Miles for Meals or becoming a volunteer to carry in lunches or serve as a substitute driver, call director Debbie Stockton at 243-4241.

Document preservation clinic set for Tuesday

St. Mark's Lodge No. 93, in conjunction with the city of Cape Girardeau, is sponsoring a document preservation clinic at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Masonic Temple on Broadway in Cape Girardeau. The clinic will be presented by Joann Feezer of Charleston, Mo. The public is invited to participate.

Recruiting items needed for senior center sale

The Jackson Senior Center is looking for unwanted items to tag in an upcoming garage sale. Donations may be dropped off at 402 E. Washington or picked up by calling the director Debbie Stockton at 243-4241.

Arnsberg Cemetery Association meets Sunday

The annual meeting of the Arnsberg Cemetery Association is slated for 2 p.m. Sunday at the cemetery grounds, two miles west of Interstate 55 on Route KK in Cape Girardeau County. Sikeston Jaycees announce rodeo schedule

Sikeston Jaycees announced the 52nd annual Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo is slated for Aug. 11 to 14. Entertainment includes Emerson Drive and Joe Nichols, Blake Shelton, Chris Cagle and Phil Vassar. A donation of $818 from early sales was presented to Kenny Rogers Children's Center. Spring Chess Challenge on tap at Cape mall

The Cape Area Chess Club is planning the Spring Chess Challenge from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 22 for students in grades 4 through 8 from Jackson and Cape Girardeau. The tournament will be played at Westfield Shoppingtown West Park. Winning students will take home trophies and other prizes.
