Staff members Virginia Robert and Lynn Farrow from Riverside Regional Library recently attended the annual library advocacy day in Jefferson City. Robert and Farrow attended presentations given by the secretary of state's office and MORE net, the not-for-profit Missouri Research and Education Network which provides Internet access to 5.6 million Missourians through 130 public libraries. They also visited the Capitol and met Reps. Scott Lipke, Nathan Cooper, Steven Tilley and Peter Meyers. The event is sponsored by the Missouri Library Association.
The Community Caring Council meeting is at 7:30 a.m. Friday at SADI, 121 S. Broadview St. in Cape Girardeau. The speaker will be Heather Brooks, assistant city manager of Cape Girardeau and member of Vision 2020. Her topic is the competitive All-American City application that is being submitted to the National Civic League. The Community Caring Council was recognized in the narrative for "finding innovative solutions to problems as diverse as crime, health-care access and housing." All interested individuals and organizations are welcome to attend.
The Neighborhood Connections group will hold a 6 p.m. meeting today at Christ Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall, 101 Fountain St. in Cape Girardeau. Cpl. Ike Hammonds of the Cape Girardeau Police Department will present "Home safety and safety issues." All are invited.
Children ages 8 to 12 may come in costume for the Harry Potter Party to be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Dearmont Hall cooking lab on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. To celebrate the latest book the group will be making Hogwart's Trifle, Hagrid's Rock Cakes, Cockroach Clusters, Harry's Acid Pops and Butter Beer. Dumbledore may pay a visit. Team members of six to 10 people will answer 10 questions in 10 rounds at the Feb. 25 trivia night held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Perryville, Mo. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. The game will start at 7 p.m. Snacks and attendance prizes for everyone. Individuals and smaller groups welcome. The event, organized by Teen Council, is co-sponsored by Perry County 4-H and Perryville Chamber of Commerce. All proceeds will benefit youth organizations. Teen Council has distributed more than $9,500 to youth groups for service over the past five years. Community groups can apply for Teen Council grants at any time. Cairo's historic Magnolia Manor will host its first Mardi Gras brunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 26. Approximately 150 wild horses and burros will be available for viewing and adoption at the Bureau of Land Management-Eastern States Holding Facility, Ewing Ill. Viewing will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 10; adoptions will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 11 and 12. BLM gathers some horses and burros annually to control the population and offers them to qualified individuals for adoption. Oak Ridge kindergarten enrollment
Oak Ridge R-VI School kindergarten enrollment and screening for 3- and 4-year-olds is set for March 27 at First Baptist Church, State Highway E, Oak Ridge. Appointments are necessary and can be made by calling the school at 266-3232. Children eligible for kindergarten must be present at the time of enrollment and must be 5 years old before Aug. 1 to attend school in the fall. Documents needed include immunization records, official birth certificate, social security card and proof of residency. All immunizations must be up to date before children can attend classes. If children receive immunizations after the enrollment date their updated record must be presented on the first day of school.
