Cape Girardeau AARP chapter holds program
The Cape Girardeau Chapter of AARP No. 4041 will meet at 1:30 p.m. today at Grace United Methodist Church at Broadway and Caruthers Ave. for a program "The Aims of War --The Results of War," by Dr. Charles Sharp, a retired professor of Southeast Missouri State University history department. There will be a drawing for a door prize.
The March of Dimes will hold an informative presentation from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Commerce Bank in Cape Girardeau. Interested individuals are invited to attend for any portion of the program. The overview will include a discussion on events, board development, programs, annual giving and finance. A 20-hour basic Community Emergency Response Team course is available from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Friday, and Nov. 17 and 18; and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 19 at the Scott County EOC/E911 Building in Morley, Mo. The meeting is open to the public with the purpose of training neighborhood teams within Scott County. The Missouri Department of Agriculture, through the Building Our American Communities grant program, will award $18,000 in grants to Missouri 4-H clubs and chartered FFA chapters for projects aimed at advancing Missouri's rural communities. The maximum grant amount is $500 per recipient. Applications for the 2006 BOAC grants must be postmarked by Dec. 1 and are available through 4-H youth specialists, FFA advisors or by visiting www.mda. mo.gov/Financial/boac.htm. The Cape Area Family Resource Center is seeking donations of sheet plastic, staple guns, furring strips, fiberglass-backed ceiling panels, ceiling grid or cash for the purchase of the above items to winterize the FRC building. Loans of ladders, staple guns or donations will help. The regional Vincentian Marian Youth will assist in winterizing over a three-day weekend beginning Friday. For more information, call 334-8170.
Grace Cafe on Broadway in Cape Girardeau will hold the Cape Alternative Farmers Market of Missouri, featuring locally grown and produced items from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning Saturday. The market will be held regularly based on customer turnout and includes hydroponic-grown lettuce, fresh-cut herbs, free-range pastured frozen chicken, fresh-raised pork and beef, goat milk and herbal soaps, specialty jams, jellies, vinegars and local honey.
The Eisleben Lutheran Church in Scott City will hold its annual "Homemade Christmas," featuring a soup lunch and a homemade baked goods sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Cape Friends of Traditional Music and Dance will hold a community contra dance from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church at 101 N. In conjunction with the city's bicentennial celebration, The Historical Association of Cape Girardeau presents "Remembering Cape Girardeau" from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Convention and Visitors Bureau. The coordinator is Robert Hamlin, newly appointed program chair of the association. Dr. Frank Nickell is the moderator. The program is free and the public is invited.

The John Guild Chapter of the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, along with the Missouri State Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, will dedicate a marker to honor George Drouillard at the Red House Interpretive Center in downtown Cape Girardeau at 2 p.m. Nov. 13. Drouillard was the chief hunter and interpreter on the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery expedition. The public is invited to the program which will be attended by the new town crier, the mayor and officers of the MSSDAR.
SIKESTON, Mo. -- The Heartland Writers Guild will feature Sylvia Forbes as a guest speaker at 2 p.m. Nov. 13. She is a freelance writer living in Missouri who specializes in writing feature articles on Missouri, travel, lifestyle, history, business, art and gardening. Forbes is also the publisher of Bylines Writer's Desk Calendar, writes Web site copy and enjoys photography. She serves on the board of the Missouri Association of Publications, is a board member and program chair of the Columbia chapter of the Missouri Writers Guild and will serve on the 2006 literary panel for the Missouri Arts Council. The Mrs. Missouri United States Pagaeant is open to any woman married at least six months, age 21 or over and currently living with her husband. The Mrs. Missouri U.S. pageant will be held in conjunction with the Mrs. Kansas, Mrs. Arkansas, and Mrs. Oklahoma U.S. pageants held at the John Q. Hammons Convention Center in Joplin April 29. The pageant is a preliminary to the Mrs. United States Pageant held in Las Vegas, Nevada. The class of 1943 recently held their reunion at Marge Thompson's Longview home, Riverfront Park for a viewing of the Mississippi Tales murals and the Red House Interpretive Center and ate a formal dinner at the Drury Lodge.
