Governor's Christmas tree to come from Jackson
The Christmas tree that will adorn the Missouri governor's front lawn this year will come from Dorothy Meier of Jackson. The tree cutting is scheduled to take place at 9 a.m. today. Meier lives at 2805 County Road 330.
Cape County Genealogy Society to meet Tuesday
The Cape Girardeau County Genealogy Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Riverside Regional Library in Jackson. Margaret Cline Harmon from the Scott County Historical Society will present a program titled "Family and Rural Cemeteries: Document and Celebrate Them!"
The Cape Girardeau County Genealogy Society is an organization of about 200 people. The group meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Nonmembers are welcome at all meetings. Membership costs $10 per year. For more information, call Dorothy Rowley at 243-5882.
Cape library to accept food in lieu of fines
The Cape Girardeau Public Library will accept canned and dried foods for overdue fines throughout December.
This does not apply to replacement of materials or other library fees. The food value is figured at 50 cents per item.
Collected food will be donated to FISH food pantry, which will distribute it to local families.
The library will welcome food donations even if no fines are owed.
Schedule changes for recycling waste pickup
In observance of Thanksgiving on Thursday, the City of Cape Girardeau Solid Waste Division of Public Works, including the Transfer Station and Recycling Center, will be closed.
The following changes have also been made in the solid waste and recycling pickup schedules:
Thursday's residential solid waste and recycling routes will be picked up on Wednesday.
All other pickups, including Monday, Tuesday and Friday, will remain on their normal schedules.
There will be no Wednesday special pickups for bulky refuse or compost/limb pickup this week.

Rainbow Family Feast to be held Thursday
Insisterhood and Equal Footing will host a Rainbow Family Feast from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Metropolitan Community Church, located at 833 N. Spanish St. in Cape Girardeau.
The two organizations invite everyone to celebrate their community with fun, food, friendship and film around 6 p.m. Turkey will be provided; participants are asked to bring a covered dish.
